Summary of Job Duties:

The School of Agriculture, Fisheries and Human Sciences (SAFHS) at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, an 1890 Land-Grant institution, is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Research Associate in the fish health lab. The Lonoke Fish Health and Disease Diagnostic Laboratory is located in the heart of the largest and most diverse aquaculture industries in the United States. In Arkansas, commercial fish farms raise catfish, baitfish, goldfish, sportfish fingerlings, hybrid striped bass, largemouth bass raised as foodfish, and fish sold as biocontrol agents. . The Research Associate will assist with fish health inspections and disease diagnostics and assist with high school, graduate, and undergraduate research activities.

FUNCTIONS

The Research Associate works under the supervision of the Director of Fish Health/Diagnostic laboratory. Job duties include: Provide vital laboratory support for fish health and disease diagnostics. The successful candidate will be responsible to assist with fish and shrimp health research, extension programs related to disease management strategies, assisting with but not limited to water quality, microbiology, viral analysis, maintaining cell cultures, record keeping, and data analysis. The incumbent must also assist the lab director with outreach and student activities in fish and shrimp health, disseminating research findings via different platforms, and obtaining extramural funding. Preference will be given to applicants who are highly organized, maintain labs, enjoys working in a team and independently.

Qualifications:

The Research Associate must hold a bachelor’s degree plus experience in fish/shrimp research and disease diagnostics or a master’s degree (preferred) in Aquaculture, Biology, Microbiology, Cell and Molecular Biology, or a closely related field. Prior experience including but not limited to fish and shrimp pathology, qPCR, cell culture, microscopy and other molecular techniques is highly desired. Applicants must provide three letters of recommendation, a letter of application addressing the position's requirements, curriculum vitae, and US equivalence transcripts from all universities attended. Require excellent communication skills. Preference will be given to the applicant willing to live in Lonoke and flexible work hours.
