Heralded as a hub of undergraduate innovation, the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE) creates and sustains meaningful interactions between students and faculty both within and outside the classroom. The Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE) seeks a Director of Equity and Inclusion to serve as a strategist and leader on issues of equity and inclusion, focusing on our work with students. As a division, VPUE hosts units and programs that work with all 7000 undergraduates (and many graduate students) at Stanford University, and has approximately 275 administrative and teaching staff across 7 units, on campus and globally. The 7 units are Academic Advising, Bing Overseas Study Program (BOSP), Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), Haas Center for Public Service (Haas), Program in Writing and Rhetoric (PWR), Stanford Introductory Studies (SIS), and the Vice Provost’s Office (VPO) (list of units and programs).

VPUE envisions this newly established position as an internal equity and inclusion consultant to the units and programs within VPUE. The principles of equity and inclusion--that all Stanford students should be able to succeed and thrive regardless of background or income, and that programs should promote belonging--are already embraced by VPUE staff broadly. The Director of E&I would collaborate with program staff and assist units in ensuring that program policies, processes, and practices match VPUE principles, to improve student experiences within our programs. The Director will work closely with VPUE faculty directors and program staff to help educational and student-facing programs assess areas that would benefit from concrete changes to improve equity and inclusion for students and provide guidance in implementing that process. While the Director will not interact primarily with students, the Director will need a deep understanding of the undergraduate student experience and sensitivity to student needs and concerns, in order to integrate such knowledge into VPUE practices and policies. In addition, the Director will serve as the Vice Provost’s delegate to the university-wide IDEAL initiative, and will collaborate with directors of DEI and those in similar roles, in order to align VPUE’s work with that of the university.

This position reports jointly to the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and to the Senior Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education. There will be modest shared administrative support from the Vice Provost’s Office. In addition to liaisons in each unit of VPUE, this role would work closely with the VPUE Assessment and Program Evaluation Team on questions of program improvement. The Director of E&I would find a counterpart in the Director of Human Resources who handles DEI education and workshops for VPUE staff.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead programs in identifying places where practices and policies create unintended inequitable impacts, consult on systems and process improvements, and provide expertise and resources to help programs design solutions
  • Develop core VPUE best practices to support equity and inclusion and share best practices across units, in collaboration with liaisons in each unit
  • Serve as a consultant for, and respond to, the needs of the BOSP Centers abroad
  • Develop specialized resources and workshops in response to the specific concerns and needs of a given program, or advise on program-specific strategies
  • Consult on new initiatives to ensure programs are designed from the ground up with attention to diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging
  • Serve as the Vice Provost’s delegate to the IDEAL initiative in working on university-wide projects relevant to undergraduate education
  • Establish collaboration with Directors of DEI in other schools and units
  • Collaborate with student-facing staff in Student Affairs, especially staff in the Centers for Equity, Community, and Leadership
  • The job duties listed are typical examples of work performed by positions in this job classification and are not designed to contain or be interpreted as a comprehensive inventory of all duties, tasks, and responsibilities. Specific duties and responsibilities may vary depending on department or program needs without changing the general nature and scope of the job or level of responsibility. Employees may also perform other duties as assigned.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree and eight years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience
  • Expertise and experience in the field of diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education
  • Significant experience working productively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds, and the ability to discern how marginalized populations may have differing needs
  • Sensitivity to global customs and familiarity with international variances in diversity, equity and inclusion concerns
  • Ability to establish credibility and effective working relationships across a complex, decentralized, diverse, and hierarchical institution
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise, sensitively written materials and presentations for a wide ranging audience
  • Consistent with its obligations under the law, the University will provide reasonable accommodation to any employee with a disability who requires accommodation to perform the essential functions of his or her job.

In addition, preferred requirements include:

  • Advanced degree (masters or PhD)
  • Demonstrated skills to be a catalyst, strategist, and navigate complex political landscapes
  • Familiarity with the student experience at large research universities
  • Experience working with faculty (eg, through teaching, program development, or other ways)
  • Experience developing programs and systems within an educational or other bureaucratic institution
  • Evidence and data-driven approach to making decisions, when appropriate
