WestRock’s Technical Product Management team operates in an enterprise role as part of the Strategic Initiatives team for our Global Papers business group. The team is comprised of subject matter experts that manage the combined paper product portfolio for one of the largest paper mill systems in North America, spanning 22 paper mills and 43 paper machines producing 11 million tons of containerboard, paperboard, and kraft paper products that generate a combined annual revenue of $10 billion. The team manages the product manufacturing specification requirements used by our paper mills for all WestRock paper products and provides guidance to customers (internal and external) on fitness for use for our packaging paper grades. The team also leads management of new grade additions or grade changes, supports new product development initiatives, product optimization initiatives, competitive product testing, and serves as stewards of product, mill, and machine capability supporting optimal system wide asset utilization.

The Opportunity

The Technical Product Management Team is looking for a strong Technical Product Manager who will report to the Director of Technical Product Management. The Technical Product Manager will be a subject matter expert for key strategic product lines and will work with the sales and marketing groups to align end use applications to products in the WestRock paper product portfolio. This role spans many types of activities, from strategic to tactical. The Technical Product Manager establishes and manages product performance requirements, while providing leadership and support to cross-functional teams, and bridges organizational gaps between functional groups, such as sales, marketing, operations, customer service, innovation, product development, field technical service, quality, and supply chain. 

The position is open to remote/work from home, however we would ideally like individuals to be close to our Atlanta, GA and Richmond, VA locations. 

Essential responsibilities for this role will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Support technical evaluation of products for business opportunity fit, acting as a resource to sales, operations, marketing, and strategy regarding products and end use applications.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and work with the other technical teams as needed to resolve issues. 
  • Align product requirements/specifications with market demands.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert guiding teams developing new products or modifying the existing portfolio of products.
  • Support the teams developing new specialty paper products.
  • Establish technical performance requirements of new and updated products.
  • Serve as Voice of Customer (VOC) on mill initiatives, product changes, and grade reviews.
  • Conduct benchmarking studies to ensure the competitiveness of WRK products and factor these results into product positioning strategies to be used by the strategy and marketing teams, as well as inform product development efforts. 
  • Support and/or lead company and division special projects impacting product performance, product strategy, and commercial/market growth for our paper products.
  • Support internal and external product knowledge training seminars.

Requirements:

  • BS. Degree in relevant technical field.
  • Minimum 10 years experience in the paperboard, kraft paper, or containerboard industry.
  • Technical understanding of wide array of WestRock substrates and applications.
  • Strong business acumen.
  • Ability to analyze data and identify trends and outliers.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both in writing and verbal presentations.
  • Ability to influence across all organizational levels.
  • Some travel required.
