We are looking for an top-notch journalist to work in our bureau in Afghanistan. This role, based in Kabul, is a challenging assignment, but it can also be one of the most fulfilling jobs in journalism.

Sixteen years after the U.S. intervention to oust the Taliban regime, Afghanistan’s war has escalated, with the resurgent Taliban holding or contesting about 40 percent of the country, Islamic State increasingly carrying out attacks in major cities and myriad other Islamist militants operating in its lawless regions. The country’s three-year-old unity government is plagued by factional infighting ahead of long-delayed parliamentary elections due in July 2018. With U.S. President Donald Trump agreeing to send more military advisers to shore up the international force of 13,000 troops, telling the story of one of America’s longest wars is more important than ever and requires a strong eye for spotting trends and a zeal for getting below the surface.

The Afghanistan Correspondent lives with another colleague in the Kabul bureau, reporting to the Chief Correspondent and the Afghanistan-Pakistan Bureau Chief based in Islamabad. The successful candidate will need excellent cross-cultural communication skills and a keen sense of responsibility for safety. She/he will work on a team of international and local staffers and stringers across text, pictures and TV, working in a stressful environment with often restricted movement that requires stamina and a sense of humour.

The correspondent will write and report his/her own stories, write up Afghan stringers’ raw information and work closely with a talented and energetic multimedia team to develop enterprising ideas. The successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues - text, pictures, TV and graphics – in Kabul and the region.  She/he should be able to respond to big breaking news with smart, quick trunks and follow-up plans, as well as conceptualize and frame deeper investigative pieces that explain what’s going on in Afghanistan to a global audience and set the agenda.

Key Skills:

• Proven writing, story-breaking and editing ability

• Strong news judgment and a knack for spotting new developments

• Excellent communications skills and a cool head under pressure

• Understanding of working in a cross-cultural environment

• Ability to work well in a multimedia team a must

• Experience working in hostile environments will be an advantage
