Location

The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees’ physical work location is based upon the position’s job duties and requirements, customer service and responsiveness, team and individual performance, and business needs and requirements. Our current practice requires in-office work for all employees for a minimum of three days per week. Business needs and initial onboarding may require additional days in the office.

What You’ll Do

BUILDING COMMUNITY: Denver Community Planning and Development is responsible for visionary city planning and ensuring safe, responsible, sustainable building. The City and County of Denver's, Community Planning and Development Department, is seeking a Lead Permit Review Technician who will work within our Site Design and Neighborhood Development team in our Records Management workgroup. This workgroup functions as the centralized nucleus of administration for a multi-departmental project review process supporting departmental and agency needs for customer contact, project intake, document management, quality control and record closeout/recordation. 

Some of the day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Performing lead work over permit review technicians that are providing customer service support for customers; intake and record creation for applications; assess and process fees related to individual applications and records; monitor progress for all required reviews; provide record history information for both informal and CORA requests; ongoing process improvement efforts; work with applicants to address incomplete applications
  • Provide on-the-job training, mentoring new and established employees, and assisting permit review technicians in processing and making determinations on difficult or complex permit review applications and requests. The lead position will resolve issues when problems occur between customers and technicians
  • Ensuring compliance for project submittals to our zoning code, building standards and permit guidelines, which includes ensuring forms and applications are complete and accurate
  • Developing or modifying work plans, methods, reports, and procedures to determine work priorities, ensure work quality, and provide timely response to all submittals and requests. Providing work instruction and assisting employees with difficult and unusual assignments
  • Assigning and distributing work, reviewing work for accuracy and completeness, and returning assignments with recommendations for proper completion
  • Resolving problems encountered during daily operations and determining appropriate solutions
  • Researching permit records, zoning regulations, historical documents, and a variety of databases to ensure accuracy of site plans, use of property, consolidating and correcting records, and maintaining files and documents

  • Experience within Accela is preferred
  • Experience with troubleshooting systems

  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Can easily collaborate with supervisors and leadership team members across multiple City departments to discuss issues, coordinate activities, or resolve problems 
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects at one time
  • Ability to manage time and workload effectively

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
  • Experience Requirement: Six (6) years of experience reviewing requests and issuing permits for routine public right-of-way requests, non-technical construction projects with regard to building and zoning permits, or enforcement of building and zoning codes and regulations.
  • Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
