The Common Platform Hardware Department in Military Avionics and Helicopters has an opening for a Junior Electrical Engineer. The department is responsible for the development and sustainment of state of the art avionics hardware products including integrated processing cabinets, video processing modules, and control panels used in military fighter, bomber, trainer, rotary wing, and transport aircraft platforms.

This position is for an entry level Electrical Engineer to develop digital hardware circuit boards used in high performance computing products such as Mission Computers and Data Servers. As part of our team, you'll be exposed to cutting edge technology and have the ability to significantly contribute to the creation of our newest products.

Job Responsibilities

Primary assignments will include use and application of electrical engineering principles and techniques to design, develop, document, verify, support, and troubleshoot digital hardware of low to moderate complexity for avionics products. Designs may include the use of FPGA, ARM Processors, and DDR memory components. The selected candidate will work closely with Systems, Software, Mechanical, Environmental Effects, Manufacturing/Operations and Design-to-Cost staff to assure defined requirements are consistently met in all phases of a product's lifecycle. Electrical Engineers at Rockwell Collins perform activities that span all phases of the hardware development lifecycle, including requirements capture, design, integration, verification, factory transition, and customer interface.

A successful candidate will possess:

  • Experience with digital electronics design principles
  • Some familiarity with the schematic capture process for creation of circuit card designs (PCB)
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Be able to multi-task and manage through unexpected events.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in a professional manner and produce effective, clear and concise technical documentation

A successful candidate may possess (desired experience/skills but not required):

  • Experience with circuit board designs including knowledge of PCB layout and routing rules, & EMC design
  • Interfacing with complex embedded devices (microprocessors, 2D/3D graphics processors, ASICs, FPGAs) as a part of overall hardware design.
  • Experience with Ethernet, I2C, USB, LVDS, and SERDES bus technologies. Experience with DDR1/2/3 memory interfaces.
  • Schematic capture of digital/analog mixed signal electrical circuit designs for avionics
  • DO-160 or MIL-STD-810/MIL-STD-461 qualification
  • Lighting protection circuits and testing
  • FPGA development experience
  • Knowledge of digital circuit design parameters (e.g., throughput, rise time, clock frequencies, propagation delay). Includes knowledge of computer hardware components (e.g., processors, memory, interfaces), and characteristics (e.g., throughput, processing architecture, timing, capacity).
  • Design tools experience with schematic capture, requirements capture, signal integrity and timing analysis (ex. DxDesigner, DOORS, and Hyperlynx).
  • Be capable of hand-on troubleshooting using engineering lab equipment.
  • Understanding of Design to Cost (DTC+), Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Test (DFT)
  • Hardware requirement generation experience working with systems and subsystems teams to determine meaningful and testable requirements for the design.
