Location

The City and County of Denver's Department of Parks and Recreation’s (DPR) Aquatics team is currently hiring for Aquatics Coordinators for multiple pools and recreation centers throughout Denver’s network of recreation centers. In this position, you can expect to work on-site at one of the multiple pools and recreation centers. The working location for this position is yet to be determined and will be discussed at time of interview. A list of recreation center can be found on DPR's website.

What You'll Do

With a staff of over 400 lifeguards across 15 indoor and 14 outdoor swimming pools, it takes a team of dedicated, diverse, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic individuals to ensure the highest-quality aquatic programs, safety, and customer service are being delivered to communities across Denver. The City and County of Denver’s Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is currently seeking multiple adept and accomplished recreation professionals to join this team as Aquatics Coordinators.

In this position, you will create, coordinate, and plan a variety of aquatic programs, classes, and activities while managing the day-to-day operations of a public recreation center natatorium. This position will play a key role in staffing and training the necessary staff required to operate a large-scale public pool in addition to developing new programs for community members. This is a great opportunity to work for a large and diverse aquatics program while promoting new and exciting aquatic opportunities to the surrounding community.

As an Aquatics Coordinator, you will:

  • Create, implement, and lead Aquatics programs, including swimming lessons and special events
  • Assist with the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, and coaching of part time staff members including Lifeguards and Swim Lesson Instructors
  • Oversee staff scheduling for Aquatics part time staff
  • Evaluate the success of programs and provide feedback to the Aquatics Core Team
  • Conduct regular staff training on emergency procedures
  • Deliver equitable, professional, and prompt customer service to community members and facility users
  • Create and foster partnerships with community leaders, neighborhood organizations, local schools, and other community partners to design programs that fit their unique needs and promote employment opportunities
  • Attend regular team meetings and collaborate with other Aquatics Coordinators, Recreation Supervisors, and other city agencies
  • Attend community events and serve as a Denver Parks and Recreation ambassador to the community
  • Perform basic regular maintenance and repair of pool equipment in partnership with Pool Maintenance Technicians
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested

About You

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

  • Experience performing lead work/supervisory duties over aquatics staff
  • Experience scheduling and staffing pools, including knowledge of successful lifeguard recruitment strategies
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including experience working with and mentoring youth
  • Experience engaging communities in aquatics programming and implementing new programming based on community feedback
  • The ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends
  • Experience instructing swim lessons and other Aquatic classes, an American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) and/or Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certifications
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) and/or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certifications

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate
  • Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of work experience instructing in an organized aquatic program involving the monitoring of pool equipment, pool chemicals and pool operations
  • Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements
  • Licensure:
  • Requires a Lifeguard Training Certification, CPR and AED Certifications for Professional Rescuers, and First Aid Certification at the time of application
  • Requires a Lifeguard Instructor Certification, First Aid Instructor Certification, and a Certified Pool Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator Certification prior to completion of the probationary period
  • Licensure and certification must be kept current as a condition of employment
