Job Description


The FJJMA is an integral part of the Norman campus of the University of Oklahoma. Founded almost a hundred years ago, its collections are global in ambition with particular strengths in French Impressionism, American Modernism, art of the American Southwest and Native American art. The Museum is renowned for the outstanding quality of its collections and is among the very best art museums in an American public university, serving and welcoming all audiences within both the campus population and external communities. The purpose of the FJJMA is to transform lives through experiences with art. As the Museum completes its new Strategic Plan 2024-2029, in line with the university-wide Lead On strategy, the team is reimagining the organization as a university art museum for all. Crucial elements of the Museum's Plan include a commitment to developing an excellent working culture grounded in organizational health, a warm and engaging welcome to our diverse visitors, both on- and off-campus, in part by the creation of an exciting Program, repositioning the Museum locally and on the wider stage. Strengthening existing relationships and creating new partnerships both on and off campus through the development and implementation of collaborative programming is the focus of the Community Engagement Specialist role.

Essential Duties: 

  • Evaluate and reimagine existing Learning and Engagement programming to ensure continued relevance and high levels of engagement.
  • Develop and create new Learning and Engagement programming that is responsive to the needs and interests of a wide variety of museum audiences both on and off campus.
  • Ensure that museum programming connects to visitors in a way that can be personalized, maximizes opportunities for choice, experiences feel safe and secure, and supports sharing and social interaction.
  • Identify strategic partnerships and community organizations both on and off campus to develop collaborative programming and service support.
  • Contribute to funding opportunities including grant writing, management, and reporting as it relates to museum programming.
  • Collaborate with advisory individuals and organizations to develop and facilitate programming for diverse audience groups.
  • Coordinates outreach programs and participants in educational activities as appropriate. 
  • As the Learning and Engagement department develops you will take on other responsibilities as designated by the Head of Museum Experiences.
  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.
  • Assists with exhibitions through collection-related activities.
  • Assists with the supervision of assistants, interns, and volunteers.
  • Assists in and conducts collection-related research as directed.

Meets with visitors to the collection, filling patron requests remotely and in person and giving tours to the public.

Job Requirements


Required Education: Bachelor's degree. 

Equivalency Substitution: Will accept 48 months of museum-related work experience in lieu of the Bachelor's degree.

Skills:

  • Able to communicate well and build rapport quickly with students, faculty and staff.
  • Good presentation skills (verbal and written). 
  • Experience working in a public facing arts organization with a strong and demonstrable passion for and interest in the arts and museum environments. 
  • Experience working with community groups and organizations, assisting, and supporting the needs and interests of various members.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Experience facilitating learning and engagement activities such as leading hands-on project instruction, guiding conversations with groups anchored in creating dialog, and facilitating experiences to surprise and delight audience members of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.
  • Must use established occupational health and safety practices.
  • May have experience working with under-resourced communities in either a volunteer, educational, or collaborative role.
  • May have experience engaging with campus communities and must be able to demonstrate an understanding and ability to work with the different motivations of students, faculty, staff, and student organizations.
  • Experience managing multiple projects and deadlines with efficiency, accuracy, and timeliness.

Advertised Physical Requirements:

  • Required to be mobile, agile, bend, stoop, squat, climb, lift (15-44 pounds) and carry. Ability to engage in repetitive motions. Able to read handwritten documents.
  • Frequent exposure to safety hazards from chemicals and onerous odors.

Departmental Preferences:

  • Prior experience in museum education or community outreach/engagement 

Supervision: No supervisory duties
