Guarini Dean’s Postdoctoral Fellowship in Linguistics

Dartmouth College

Description

Dartmouth College invites applications for a Guarini Dean’s Postdoctoral Fellowship in Linguistics. Our Dartmouth Linguistics Department has a long-term commitment to lesser-studied, underrepresented minority/minoritized language communities and empirical research around the world in collaboration with community members and community linguists. For this fellowship position, we are particularly interested in expanding our research involvement in North American minority/minoritized languages or dialects, although regions outside this continent may also be considered. Preferred candidates for this postdoctoral position will show evidence of active research engagement and collaboration with one or more such communities. The candidate should also be willing to teach an engaging undergraduate course on language and race/ethnicity, and to mentor undergraduate students on related research projects. Applicants will be selected on the basis of their academic achievement, promise in both research and teaching, and their demonstrated commitment to educational diversity. Applications from candidates who are underrepresented in their fields are especially welcome.

This is a two-year residential fellowship starting in Fall 2024, with one course taught in the second year. Fellows are expected to pursue research activities while participating fully in the intellectual life of the department and Dartmouth College. Fellows receive an annual stipend of approximately $60,000 plus benefits and an allocation for research expenses (exact funding levels will be set at the time of offer.)

Guarini Dean's Postdoctoral Fellows are part of the Provost’s Fellowship Program, a multidisciplinary cohort of approximately ten predoctoral and postdoctoral scholars who share a commitment to increasing diversity in their disciplines. Fellows participate together in mentoring and professional development programming, including guidance in preparing for faculty careers. Fellows are also supported by the Guarini School for Graduate and Advanced Studies, including their diversity and inclusion initiatives.

The Department of Linguistics and Dartmouth are committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive population of students, faculty, and staff. Dartmouth recently launched a new initiative, Toward Equity, that embraces shared definitions of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging as a foundation for our success in institutional transformation. We are especially interested in applicants who are able to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from all backgrounds and with different identities and attributes. Applicants should address in their fellowship statement how their teaching, research, service, and/or life experiences prepare them to advance Dartmouth’s commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion. This statement will be evaluated as part of the selection process.

Qualifications

Ph.D. degree, or ABD with degree received before the start date, in linguistics and experience with field research in a minority/minoritized language community, including community engagement and collaboration in the research.
