RBC is reimaging the role we play in our clients’ lives. To do this, we are creating dedicated teams which will operate separately from the core banking business. These teams will operate in a completely agile environment where they will be able to create new experiences, explore new business models and develop partnerships to help differentiate RBC.

One such team is RBC’s Strategic Design Centre of Excellence (SD CoE). This team conducts consumer research and brings user-centered design best practices and methods to create extraordinary customer experiences and innovations which are intended to transform the way in which consumers experience RBC.


SD CoE is hiring a Creative Director who will report to the Head of SD CoE. This position plays a critical role in defining the brand identity, tonality, and positioning of our new ventures, implementing and evangelizing Design Thinking and UCD methodologies, and crafting user experiences in partnership with technology and product teams to create exciting and inspiring new products and services. This leader works closely with the Experience Designers, Product Leads, Engineers, and internal stakeholders to effectively create and communicate concepts and solutions and solicit feedback from consumers in an effort to create the optimal experience.


What will you do?

  • Grow the Experience Design practice by recruiting, hiring and managing a team of 4-6 Experience Designers
  • Establish and adapt Design Thinking and UCD practices to ensure our SD CoE practices match the pace and structure of our new organization
  • Oversee the creative work produced across SD CoE to ensure we’re creating unmatched, customer-first products and services  
  • Establish, evaluate and manage relationships with external design agencies that act as an extension of our organization. Act as the liaison between internal teams and any external agency partner.
  • Work directly with product teams, internal stakeholders and SD CoE Design Practitioners to ideate and problem solve. Rather than take orders on what to build, this role is paramount in exploring consumer needs, identifying ideas, and creating strategies and solutions in partnership with internal and external team members.

What do you need to succeed?


Must Haves

  • Passion to drive change and make an impact
  • 10+ years building compelling digital experiences (ideally in both agency and corporate environments) with at least 3 years in overseeing Design teams
  • Deep understanding of our business and strategic aspirations
  • Structure and an organized approach to designing customer-first experiences, with the ability to think creatively to craft experiences that are new, differentiated and extraordinarily compelling
  • Ability to think big picture strategy and tactically build and take solutions to market
  • Experience building trusted partner relationships with Marketing, Advertising, and/or Design agencies
  • Demonstrated experience designing mobile, digital and new technology solutions
  • Ability to work in a collaborative, supportive way with cross-functional teams and the ability to work independently (and with ambiguity) to achieve results
  • Bachelors’ degree in communications, visual design, or related field


  • Experience and success in small startup environments
  • Experience in Banking or Financial Services
  • Advanced degree in marketing, communications, public relations, advertising, visual design and/or human-centered design, or related fiel
