Action Against Hunger-USA is part of the Action Against Hunger International network, which provides humanitarian relief in over 40 countries worldwide in the sectors of nutrition, health, water/sanitation, and food security. Action Against Hunger-USA, an independent NGO, currently manages operations in 9 countries: Kenya, South Sudan, Nigeria, Pakistan, Cambodia, Tanzania, Uganda, Somalia, Haiti. Action Against Hunger-USA has over $110 million in programs, and approximately 2000 staff based in the various country offices and the three Head Quarter Locations of New York City, Washington D.C and Nairobi. Additional growth is anticipated.

Summary of position

As a member of the Multisector Emergency Team, the Health and Nutrition Expert, will support the implementation of Multi sectoral Emergency response through nutrition, health, WASH, FSL and protection activities during emergency deployment of the MET/SURGE team within South Sudan (Country-wide).

Purpose:

The Health and Nutrition Expert will lead and provide technical support to the Multi sectoral Emergency teams during deployment and liaise with local authorities and stakeholders in area of deployment to ensure smooth emergency program interventions delivery. Work with the Head of Emergency and the Senior Nutrition Expert for identification and analyses of areas where emergency response needs to be established according to needs and capacities.

Key activities in your role will include:

  • Technical lead and oversee the emergency response management in deployment area through :
  • Providing technical leadership in Nutrition, Health, WaSH, FSL and Protection activities,
  • Management/coaching of staff, coordination with partners and stakeholders involved.
  • Provide capacity building a well as support in the collection, analysis and reporting on nutrition related surveys and contribute to other research related projects
  • Liaison with other departments (WASH, FSL,) in planning and executing activities to ensure effective response
  • Run field operations and implementing activities in accordance with rules, policies and procedures for effective operations on HR Policy, finance, logistics functions and operational and safety procedures.
  • Strengthen integration of nutrition and health services to all patients (IMCI and women, mainly) and Nutrition beneficiaries (malnourished children U5 and PLWs) as per national guidelines of community health (refer to ICCM):
  • Support the identification of referral pathways (on GBV & psychosocial support) to appropriate and available psychosocial support and protection services for all MET beneficiaries.
  • General Support to HR Department and maintain HR policy in area of deployment, staff under direct supervision:
  • Represent Action Against Hunger in area of deployment, coordinate internally with Action Against Hunger MET members and externally with stakeholders/authorities linked to project components.
  • Report timely to line manager activities progress reports, interim and final reports as required by programme including success stories and lesson learnt.

Requirements

  • Bachelor degree in public health, nutrition, medical doctor, nursing or related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience setting up and managing health & Nutrition programme in emergency and fragile contexts.
  • Registered with an appropriate professional body.
  • At least 5 years of experience with community based approach to malnutrition treatment (CMAM and inpatient), including community mobilization and monitoring & evaluation aspects.
  • Extensive experience in project life cycle, proposal writing, Budget management, reporting and managing teams.
  • Technical expertise in Health & nutrition program, information system, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Significant experience in working and collaboration with governments and demonstrating capacity towards achievements through national institutions.
  • Capacity building skills.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in English
  • Analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Good management and representation competencies.
  • Excellent in influencing and negotiation skills.
  • Willing to travel in remote areas with basic living conditions (easily integrate with remote areas living conditions.
