Your role

CBC is seeking a Project Manager to lead an Indigenous Archives Project for Northern Canada.

This role will be based in Yellowknife, NWT. 

At its core, this role is founded on four key elements:

  • Researching and curating the stories of Northern Canada to ensure this content is documented and preserved for future generations of Canadians. 
  • Developing meaningful connections and fostering collaborative relationships between Canada’s Northern communities and the CBC that deepen understanding and engagement with the project.
  • Cultivating and nurturing a space that broadens and enhances further engagement initiatives and actionable plans for deepening community connection.
  • Engaging and activating connections with knowledge holders within the community that can continue to support the project as it evolves. 

Under the direct guidance of the Senior Managing Director for CBC North, the Project Manager will be responsible for developing engagement strategies with identified language communities throughout the North in support of the Indigenous Languages Archives project. This would be accomplished with significant emphasis on deepening understanding about the scope of the archives project and connecting with key stakeholders, including elders and community groups, to discuss the archives project and gathering feedback to inform future actions.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Working with the Talent and Acquisition team to recruit researchers to catalog and archive material in various northern Indigenous languages. 
  • Working with senior management, develop a communication schedule to update stakeholders on the progress of the project.
  • Gather community feedback and partner with stakeholder and language cultural groups to explore ways for the community to directly engage with the Indigenous Archives project, both in accessing content and in being part of the process to deepen the understanding about the content itself.
  • Establishing connections and ensuring that community leaders across the North are well informed about the progress of the project.
  • Develop, supervise and coordinate the work of a diverse team of individuals from various disciplines to successfully complete the objectives of the archive project.
  • As the project evolves, providing counsel to management on expanding the stakeholder base to inviting involvement from others in the Indigenous community or government once established, more deeply explore specific engagement initiatives and meaningfully contribute to strategic discussions and long-term planning around increasing connection and engagement with the Indigenous Languages Archive project.

You possess the following:

  • Deep knowledge of and connection to Northern and Indigenous communities in Canada including a demonstrated awareness of cultural/geographical concerns and realities.
  • Significant experience in project planning & execution, ideally underpinned with a Project Management Professional (PMP) or similar designation or education.
  • An ability to work effectively in situations involving rapid change, shifting priorities and/or simultaneous demands.
  • A strong track record of collaborative leadership and an ability to demonstrate sound judgment and creative problem solving.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, both written and verbal, that support you in building trust and finding common ground, even in difficult situations.
  • Above average communication skills that enable you to deal effectively at all levels of the organization and with public and private external groups.
  • Innovative thinker with a solid ability to plan strategically while working tactically.
  • Ability to assign, manage, and mentor staff in a motivating manner, and to resolve challenges as they arise.
  • Fluency with technology related systems and software is required.
  • Knowledge of an Indigenous language associated with the Indigenous Language Archive Project is a strong asset.
