Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this vital role as the Executive Director of Global Program Management, Obesity, you are a member of the Amgen Commercialization Portfolio and Program Management leadership team and will be a strategic partner to the Global Obesity Organization. 

The Executive Director, CMZ- PM Obesity Lead will work closely with the cross-functional Global Obesity Organization to drive disease area strategies and ensure integrated program plans are aligned and prioritized across the TA portfolio. This senior leadership position drives oversight of program execution across the assigned portfolio and is accountable for delivery of all associated discussions, results, goals, and landmarks. This role works to ensure that Global Program Managers (GPM) are providing leadership to their programs and that cross-functional teams operate effectively, encouraging positive team dynamics and championing Amgen’s operating model.

In this global role, the Executive Director, CMZ PM TA Lead has internal, external, and regional interactions and reports to the Vice President of Commercialization, Program and Portfolio Management.

Responsibilities

  • Supervising the strategy, execution, and decision-making processes for Global Project Teams across the portfolio in support of Amgen product development and lifecycle management portfolio
  • Collaborating with cross-functional partners to advance Amgen’s portfolio of drug development projects in the most efficient and effective way
  • Drive development of an end-to-end TA strategy to guide internal and external innovation
  • Core member of the Global Obesity Organization leadership team which provides technical and strategic guidance to Product Teams (PTs)
  • Partner with Business Development in active exploration of external innovation and ensuring speed and effectiveness of deal executions
  • Forging relationships and cross-functional collaboration and regional collaboration
  • Leading key activities in line with the mission and vision set by the CMZ and Amgen leadership teams
  • Driving strategic business planning and execution against set goals for specific TA
  • Define and implement strategic objectives for the Obesity portfolio, ensuring clear, actionable plans are in place for all Therapeutic Area teams to achieve measurable results.
  • Resolving sophisticated strategic and operational issues and interactions between projects and keeping cross-functional team members advised
  • Communicating assessments and outputs from portfolio prioritization, brand planning, launch planning, and new pipeline and commercial assets to key collaborators across the organization, including executive management
  • Delivering key messages and presentations to the department and senior executives
  • Leading a team of Global Project Managers (GPMs) and Senior Program Managers (SPMs) who are responsible for the program strategy, execution, and effective operations of Project Team (PTs) and Work Package Teams (WPTs)
  • Partnering with the CMZ Portfolio Management Operations team to drive adherence to reporting standards and timelines
  • Working directly with Finance to ensure budget optimization for all responsible programs and facilitating discussions and reviews of FTEs / resource needs / through periodic assessments with the heads of functions
  • Developing and training staff in Project Management excellence and drug development oversight and driving initiatives to increase PM maturity
  • Representing the vision and mission of the CMZ department to the Amgen organization, and provide mentorship to junior staff
  • Bringing project management leadership and expertise in the due diligence assessment and integration of external assets upon deal closure
  • Effectively manage complex issues and keep leadership team focused on long-term strategic goals

Basic Qualifications

  • Doctorate degree & 6 years of commercialization or program management experience OR 
  • Master’s degree & 10 years of commercialization or program management experience OR 
  • Bachelor’s degree & 12 years of commercialization or program management experience AND 
  • 6 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Life Sciences, or a related field. Ph.D. preferred
  • Prior experience growing Obesity/Diabetes portfolio.
  • Preferred experience within the field being able to influence peers on the leadership team
  • Experience in broad and complex drug development programs
  • Experience in a new, emerging field within the industry, and understand how to navigate payers, keep differentiating as the field continues to evolve, and find best ways to commercialize assets that crosses the family practitioner and specialty areas.
  • Strong stakeholder management and ability to influence without authority
  • Ability to communicate, at a broad level, that is concise for executives while being able to manage governance meetings and key stakeholders
  • Ability to quickly assess and remove obstacles, whether with the broader leadership, or guiding PMs within the teams themselves
  • Comprehensive understanding of drug development processes
  • Budget management experience
  • Experience working with global drug development teams and associated regulatory authorities
  • Pharmaceutical R&D drug development knowledge with advanced understanding of other functions; including, but not limited to, Research, Pre-Clinical, Clinical, Manufacturing and Operations, Commercial, Regulatory, and Medical Affairs
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams in a matrix environment, managing global projects involving multiple functions and shared accountabilities
  • Broad knowledge of project management best practices in the biopharmaceutical industry
  • Portfolio Management, Strategic Planning, Risk Management experience
  • Working knowledge of Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK)

The annual base salary range for this Executive Director level role is $268,558 - $322,288.
