Overview

The New York Public Library is seeking a dynamic, progressive and enthusiastic senior manager to provide leadership, professional development, and oversight to our three library networks in Manhattan. 

Reporting to the Vice President, Branch Libraries and Patron Services, the Director will serve as a strategic coach, leader, and manager to a team of 3 Associate Directors who are individually responsible for a network of neighborhood libraries. The Director will be an innovative problem solver and consensus builder who will analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals and strategic priorities. The Director will be responsible for blending traditional and leading-edge library services and have the ability to meet the demands of a rapidly changing, high-tech, digital environment. This director will be required to maintain a full-time in-person presence in Manhattan.

Responsibilities: 

The Borough Director for Manhattan will:

  • Lead the development and implementation of annual objectives, strategic priorities, policies and guidelines for the borough: establishes, within NYPL policies, appropriate services, programs, standards and staffing levels; allocates resources accordingly
  • Develop and maintain a culture of accountability and coach Associate Directors and other team members to perform to their highest potential; develop and lead succession plans as needed
  • Serve as the key borough point person for collaborative partnerships with City agencies, CBOs, political officials and current & prospective donors; defends Library programs, policies, and activities; negotiates and resolves sensitive, significant, and controversial issues
  • Lead visits to branches to capture information needed to make recommendations regarding the maintenance and improvement of existing library services and facilities and the implementation of new services on a location-by-location basis through the analysis of user insights data, metrics and other feedback mechanisms
  • Manage and participate in the development and administration of the Networks’ budgets; directs the forecast of additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies as well as the monitoring and approval of expenditures
  • Develop and lead committees and project teams whose work is relevant to the Library’s strategic initiatives
  • Manage and maintain excellent customer service within the borough; manage customer service communication; ensure cross-organization participation and resource sharing/referral, participate in library renovation planning, program reviews, service design, etc.
  • Serve as the key borough point person for management of staff across the borough in collaboration with the Associate Directors. 
  • Support decisions/development of performance actions in coordination with Associate Directors and Human Resources
  • Attend professional meetings; maintain active membership in state and national library associations; participate in activities of professional organizations; keep informed on current trends and developments affecting libraries
  • Work on special projects, as required by the Vice President
  • Perform related duties as required

Required Education, Experience & Skills

Required Education & Certifications

  • MLS degree from an ALA accredited library education program and eligibility for New York State Public Librarian’s Certificate required

Required Experience

  • 7+ years of progressively responsible public library management experience, including 4 years of supervisory responsibility
  • Experience coaching, mentoring, developing and managing the performance of staff
  • Demonstrable experience collaborating with diverse populations, local politicians and community boards to generate support, enhance services, and meet the evolving needs of users

Required Skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and possess the ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in written word with a diverse group of constituencies 
  • Demonstrated ability to apply clear and reasoned independent judgment in a wide variety of situations and engagement with complex issues in a changing environment
  • Strong collaboration and critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrated organizational and planning skills with the ability to successfully manage multiple tasks to completion simultaneously
  • Strong customer service orientation

Managerial/Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of up to 13 Library Managers
  • Ability to maintain a full-time in-person presence in Manhattan
