Job Summary

Position functions within the IT services department and is responsible for day-to-day administration and maintenance of Local Area Network (LAN), user support, and future developments to include network expansion and upgrades, software packages, and streamlining processes. The Jr. System Administrator’s role is to manage and tune in-house computer hardware and software systems, and network connections to ensure high levels of availability and security of the supported business applications. This individual also participates in the planning and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure system provisioning and maintenance that is consistent with company goals, industry best practices, and regulatory requirements. Strong customer service orientation is required. Must have proven analytical and problem-solving abilities with the ability to learn new systems quickly. Must be able to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment. Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills are required. Adept at reading, writing, and interpreting technical documentation and procedure manuals. Ability to conduct research into hardware and software issues and products as required. Ability to present ideas and solutions in user-friendly language. Highly self-motivated and directed. Keen attention to detail. Skilled at working within a team-oriented, collaborative environment.

A. Job Duties

Essential Functions:

1. Provide IT maintenance, support and monitoring services for business and laboratory applications, servers, storage, networks and communication systems

2. Provide tier 2 help desk support services when assigned and liaise with Tier 3 or third-party help desk services as directed.

3. Provision workstations, servers, printers, scanners, firewalls, encryption systems, and all host security systems as directed and in accordance with company standards.

4. Provision laboratory and business applications as directed and in accordance with company standards. This includes provisioning of virtual server instances, Citrix application layers and physical computers.

5. Test and validate applications/technologies prior to release into the production environment and in accordance with company standards. This includes following proper change control and related procedures.

6. Perform site level backup and archiving activities as directed and in accordance with company standards. This includes customer and systems data.

7. Position will act as primary electronic archivist for electronic data generated from instruments with computerized operating systems capable of meeting the 21CRF11 requirements.

8. Additional duties as assigned.

Marginal Functions:

1. Support all operating systems and end-user software.

2. Support communication (e-mail, instant messaging, etc.) and connection solutions, including workstation connectivity, local area networks, company intranet, Internet applications, and phone systems.

3. Ensure the integrity and security of enterprise data on host computers, in multiple databases, and during data transfer in accordance with business needs and industry best-practices regarding privacy, security, and regulatory compliance.

4. Manage input/output fleet, including printers and scanners.

5. Manage end user accounts, permissions, access rights, and storage allocations in accordance with best practices regarding privacy, security, and regulatory compliance on multiple networks.

6. Perform network and security audits.

7. Perform and test routine system backups and restores.

8. Anticipate, mitigate, identify, troubleshoot, and resolve hardware and software problems on servers, network, input/output fleet, and workstations. Escalate incidents as necessary.

9. Practice network asset management, including maintenance of network component inventory and related documentation and technical specifications information.

10. Support application development teams throughout project lifecycles.

11. Support customized systems (Part 11 archiving system).

12. Analyze system, server, application, network, and input/output device performance and reliability.

13. Recommend, schedule, and perform software and hardware improvements, upgrades, patches, reconfigurations, and/or purchases.

14. Conduct research on emerging products, services, protocols, and standards in support of systems software procurement and development efforts.

15. Create required reports in response to business user needs.

16. Participate in negotiations with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors to secure hardware and software products or services.

17. Develop, document, and maintain policies, procedures and associated training plans for system administration and appropriate use.

18. Assist and/or provide guidance to junior members of the team.

B. Laboratory Safety

1. Must be able to wear gloves, lab coat, eye protection, sleeves, hearing protection, pesticide suit, plastic booties, dust masks, and a face mask.

2. Must be able to understand and follow laboratory safety standards

Job Specifications

College diploma or university degree in the field of computer science and 2+ years equivalent work experience. Knowledge of Citrix, VMware, Microsoft, ChromeOS, and Linux operating systems. Knowledge of Agilent Chemstation ECM, Lablogic Laura, Sciex Analyst, and/or Finsbury DaCS software preferred. Working technical knowledge of current systems software, protocols, and standards, including Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft email services (Exchange/ M365), SonicWall firewall/VPN, Active Directory, SQL Server, Aruba/HPe networking, NAS and SAN storage, Citrix VDI, Google Enterprise, and cloud-hosted applications. Strong knowledge of local and wide area network administration. Hands-on software and hardware troubleshooting experience. Experience with data management, including backups, disaster recovery, and archiving. Experience documenting and maintaining configuration and process information. Good understanding of the organization’s goals and objectives. Knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws. Experience with scripting and automation tools is a plus.
