The Corporate Strategy team supports executive and board level strategic decision making across Optus using key commercial, customer, market and competitive insights. The team also facilitates the annual strategy review to fine tune the company’s strategy and shape the strategic priorities over the next 1-3 years.

This role will lead detailed assessments of competitive strategies, aid with the development of Optus’ long-term plans, run the end-to-end strategic planning cycle and develop investment cases for major strategic initiatives. Additionally, the role will support the exploration and execution of inorganic growth and M&A initiatives in collaboration with the Optus and Singtel leadership teams.

Your core responsibilities

You will play the vital role of 2IC to the Senior Director of Strategy and lead a broad range of strategy projects and processes, including:

  • Driving cross-company and BU specific strategy projects, including leading multi-disciplinary project teams comprised of members of the strategy team and SMEs seconded in from across Optus;
  • Leading reviews of market and competitive trends to deliver critical insights that drive decision making in terms of Optus’ responses;
  • Comprehensive strategic planning, including facilitating large components of the annual strategy review and co-facilitation (with the Finance team) of the Annual Operating Plan (AOP);
  • Developing fact-based insights from competitor and market trends and providing the “so what” insights for the Optus business;
  • Providing critical insights and second order thinking on competitor and consumer trends to the CEO, CFO, MDs and key decision makers;
  • Identifying new revenue opportunities based on market forecast insights and interfacing the business and long-term planning function;
  • End-to-end leadership of M&A projects
  • Developing and delivering Executive and Board-level presentations, papers and reports to articulate key strategic issues and guide strategic decision making; &
  • Providing thought leadership within your team and across the Optus SLT.

Your key ingredients for success

  • 15+ years of experience across a combination of a top-tier strategy consulting, and strategy roles within the telecommunications sector, or senior strategy roles in another closely related field;
  • Tertiary qualified in a relevant Finance / Business / Commercial field;
  • Extensive experience in a senior central strategy leadership role, either within a corporate strategy function or working with strategy functions in a senior consulting capacity;
  • You have proven thought leadership skills and are considered a content expert in a telecommunications area;
  • Significant experience developing and implementing strategic plans for telecommunications operators;
  • Experience of leading small-medium sized teams as well as operating as a team of one; &
  • Extensive experience of engaging senior leaders and presenting at Executive / Board level.
