Primary Function

The Aircraft Mechanic / Crew Safety Specialist / Cargo Handler –performs a variety of simple to moderately complex tasks on airplane general, airframe and powerplant systems.

Essential Duties

  • Perform maintenance on aircraft, including mechanical systems, and/or ground support equipment. 
  • Repair, inspect and maintain structural, mechanical and electrical elements of the aircraft. 
  • Knowledgeable in the use of and be able to train others in the use of a wide variety of diagnostics devices, computers, hand, and mechanical tools. 
  • Provide oversight and have the ability to direct and train others in the completion of aircraft related maintenance tasks. 
  • May include Designated System Inspector (DSI) duties.
  • Troubleshoot systems as required to meet customer needs.
  • Document maintenance as per Quality Assurance (QA) and established regulatory requirements. 
  • Perform regular Foreign Object Damage (FOD) walks.
  • Maintain tool control. Report missing, lost, found, or unattended tools to the supervisor. Inventory and inspect tools on a regular basis and replace worn or broken tools.
  • Comply with safety rules and regulations while performing day to day maintenance. Promptly report all accidents, injuries, safety violations, and/or unsafe practices or procedures to supervisor.
  • The Aircraft Mechanic may be required to perform other related duties to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.
  • Validate the number of passengers, assist in loading/unloading of passengers, weigh bags and cargo, load the aircraft, secure freight and cargo.
  • Oversee aircraft fueling or lavatory servicing while at out-stations such as military bases or Fixed Based Operators (FBO).
  • Secure the aircraft while at out-stations for overnight parking.

If functioning as a Crew Safety Specialist, the following duties are applicable:

On operational missions, the Pilot in Command may assign duties to the CSS to carry out specified routine safety responsibilities and manage aft cabin safety requirements. In the event of an onboard emergency, CSSs are responsible for managing passenger safety and, if necessary, passenger evacuation. CSSs conduct cabin safety briefings.

A CSS:

  • Manages passenger accountability, loading, and departing.
  • Performs passenger safety briefings.
  • Opens, closes, and locks entrance doors.
  • Handles baggage, including on-loading, off-loading, and securing the baggage in the appropriate aircraft compartment.
  • Weighs, loads, and restrains cargo.
  • Ensures compliance with aircraft baggage and cargo limitations.
  • Supervises refueling and checking fuel and lubricant levels.
  • Receives and stows catering materials.
  • Assists the flight crew as required.
  • Conducts Daily and Transit Checks.

Performs aircraft maintenance as required, within capabilities.

Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities 

  • Beginner to intermediate computer skills specifically using Microsoft Office Suite; ability to learn additional computer skills or software programs. Working knowledge of advanced software applications is preferred
  • Ability to enter data accurately into databases.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. 
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Interpersonal skills are necessary to work effectively and cooperatively with all levels of management and staff. Will also routinely interact with other crew members
  • Ability to use general office equipment such as fax, phone, copier, scanner, printers, etc.
  • Ability to follow a process.
  • Strong professional customer service skills, including active listening, prompt service and follow-up. 
  • Strong decision analysis and problem solving skills; ability to draw conclusions and justify decisions. Must be able to communicate issues to management.
  • Ability to learn and understand corporate policies and procedures and how they relate to goals.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations
  • High degree of self-motivation and the ability to work independently 
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Climbs on top of and down from aircraft using aircraft hand/foot holds, capable of lifting up to 25 lbs. overhead, on feet all day, walk up to 2 miles per day. 
  • QC/QA experience preferred.

Required Qualifications

  • Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airplane and/or Powerplant certification.
  • 3+ years of aircraft maintenance on 737 Classis aircraft.
  • Knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within the field required.
  • May be required to travel domestically and internationally – US Passport required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) “Q” clearance within a timeframe set forth by management. US Citizenship required.
