The Resident is involved in a combination of supervised, progressively more complex and independent patient evaluation and management functions, formal educational and research activities. Provision of care is commensurate with the physician's level of advancement and competence, under the general supervision of appropriately privileged attending teaching staff.

Patient Care

  1. Participate in safe, effective and compassionate patient care under supervision, commensurate with their level of advancement and responsibility. Assume progressive responsibility for patient care activities according to residents' level of education, ability and experience.
  2. Participate in the clinical evaluation and care of patients in a variety of patient care settings with sufficient frequency b. Achieves the competencies required by their discipline under the direct supervision of the attending staff.
  3. Residents may write orders and progress notes in patient charts under the supervision of appropriately credentialed teaching staff
  4. Communicates effectively regarding the findings of their evaluation, physical examination, interpretation of diagnostic tests, and intended interventions on a continuous basis.
  5. Participate in institutional programs and activities involving the medical staff.
  6. Develop an understanding of ethical, socioeconomic and medical/legal issues that affect graduate medical education and participate in institutional committees and councils, especially those that relate to patient care review activities, quality assurance, and apply cost containment measures in the provision of patient care.

  1. Develop a personal program of self-study and professional growth under the general supervision of appropriately credentialed teaching staff.

Doctor of Medicine degree

Licensure

Valid, unrestricted Louisiana State Medical license (except for year 1 residents: must obtain intern registration from the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners)
