Job Summary:

Reporting to the Associate Director, Data Governance, the Investment Data Governance Analyst is responsible for a broad range of data governance activities supporting all groups within Finance. This position will require knowledge of data governance best practices as it pertains to investment data, as well as an understanding of how investment data resides within investment applications and how to enable it for data driven decision making. The position also requires familiarity with investments instruments at a macro level as well as the ability to quickly develop a detailed understanding of HOOPP investment Products & Strategies.

The individual will be focused on implementing and enhancing data governance solutions, provide operational support such as maintenance of data dictionary/catalog, and provide operational support for data governance tools. The individual will work with the Associate Director to establish strong data governance practices across Finance, HOOPP and promote a data governance culture.

What you will do:

Data Governance Solutions

  • Support the development and enhancements to technology solutions around key data governance focus areas of data dictionary/catalog, metadata management, data quality management, data flows/diagrams and access management.
  • Develop data quality checks and reconciliations, as well as trade flow and lineage diagrams, to establish confidence in the data and provide transparency to the data source.

Data Governance Process and Implementation

  • Support the enforcement and adherence to HOOPP data governance principles and Investment Data Governance policy.
  • Promote data governance practices and their importance in maintaining data quality and compliance to stakeholders.
  • Work closely with IT partners during the development of new solutions and data governance related applications, including requirements validation and testing.

Data Governance Support

  • Maintain the data dictionary and provide ongoing operational support.
  • Partner with stakeholders and data stewards to define and instrument metadata capture and storage for the Critical Data Elements, evolve our business glossary, and facilitate the linkage between business definitions and the underlying technical metadata.
  • Support the provisioning of new data requests, to ensure adherence to standards and prevent data duplication. This includes recommending data placement, field naming, and facilitating users in accessing the most suitable data sources.
  • Monitor data governance tools on a daily basis, perform ongoing maintenance, validate the health of the tool (i.e. successful job completions, data restrictions are respected, access restrictions are up to date).
  • Maintain and manage the processes around metadata repositories (data dictionary, business glossary) including data definitions, data dictionaries, and field naming conventions, to provide context and understanding of data assets.
  • Provide ongoing access, maintenance, usage, and technical support for our data governance tools.
  • Support Quarterly Access Reviews for data governance solutions, and other activities related to Data Governance and Compliance as required (i.e. ICFR, IT GRC, etc).
  • Administer KPI and metric reports to gauge the health and maturity of data governance program.

Data Governance of Investment Data and Understanding of HOOPP’s Investments

  • Have an in depth understanding of how investment data flows into and is captured within Investment Applications at HOOPP. Understand and right size the governance of the data that is made available to end users and systems.
  • Develop an understanding of the Fund Portfolio Structure and the rationale for its design. Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the characteristics of all the marketable securities, derivative contracts and other investments (i.e. externally managed hedge funds, infrastructure, private equity and real estate) that are contained within the various Fund Portfolios.

Documentation

  • Document and update both existing and newly developed processes and workflows, ensuring they remain current and accessible to stakeholders.
  • Regularly update procedures to ensure their relevance and accuracy.
  • Create operational documentation for new data governance solutions.

What you bring:

  • 3+ years of experience in implementing data governance, data analytics or data quality tools. Experience within the pension and/or financial services industry is a strong asset.
  • Completion of Canadian Securities Course or enrolment/ completion of relation professional training (e.g. CFA) is an asset
  • Knowledge in data governance technology, business process modelling, metadata, data lineage, data classification, data quality and enterprise implementation of data governance tools and solutions.
  • Experience with tools and applications such as Snowflake, SimCorp Dimension, SAP HANA, GoldenSource, Bloomberg, Precisely Data360 DQ+.
  • Experience with Python, and Business Intelligence tools is an asset.
  • Understanding and usage of SQL keywords, data types, constraints, pivots, sub queries, logical and comparison operators, and advanced joins (inner, outer) and unions.
  • Advanced Excel skills with the ability to write and create advanced formulas using VLOOKUP, Arrays, Index and Match functions, debug and audit.
  • Proficiency in debugging error messages among various applications is essential for this role, ensuring smooth software operation and user experience.
  • An understanding of Cloud, architectural concepts - data lake, data warehouse, relational databases, data ingestion, ETL etc.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication to effectively articulate and communicate with both business and technical development teams.
  • A team player with a good understanding of the Agile methodology and Change management.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, math or a field related to information, data management, analytics, or financial services.
