Planned Parenthood of Northern New England is seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) to fill a full time, 37.5 hour per week position is based out of the Portland, Maine, Health Center. This position will provide direct clinical services, as well as various health center support functions related to basic reproductive healthcare, family planning/contraception and abortion; assist in our health center procedural care providing patient support, sedation and recovery services; participate in patient follow up care and referral coordination; and assist with ongoing continuous quality improvement and risk management initiatives.

CHARACTERISTIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Demonstrates a commitment to recognizing and mitigating unconscious bias in the provision of sexual and reproductive health care.
  • Provide excellent, patient-centered care in collaboration with PPNNE colleagues including licensed and non-licensed staff
  • Provide health care that is culturally and linguistically appropriate to PPNNE patient populations
  • Counsel/educate patients regarding all services offered by PPNNE including general reproductive health care; all FDA-approved methods of birth control, including emergency contraception; pregnancy options; and other services related to physical and emotional health and wellbeing
  • Adhere to all reporting requirements and state laws relevant to the abuse of minors and relevant to infectious disease reporting
  • Train other team members on hard skills such as vital signs measurement, IM deltoid injections, IV placement and venipuncture
  • Conducts comprehensive medical history interviews and risk assessments
  • Dispenses and administers medications from the health center formulary in accordance with PPNNE protocols
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Support advanced practice clinicians (APCs) in the provision of abortion services to patients:
  • Provide patient education and informed consent for both medication and procedural abortion care
  • Assist during -procedural abortion, including administration and monitoring of analgesia and sedation
  • Assist and observe patients after abortion procedure to determine readiness for discharge
  • Provide follow-up information to patients after abortion procedures;
  • Assist with coordination of referral to emergency care as indicated
  • Support advanced practice clinicians in provision of direct services to contraceptive or general clinic patients through patient education and counseling; pregnancy testing and option counseling; blood testing; screening of potential complications; making appropriate referrals
  • Support with other procedural care as needed such as vasectomy and colposcopy
  • Perform ultrasound for interpretation by advanced practice clinician
  • Perform routine lab work including venipuncture and point of care testing
  • Understand the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, templates, and comply with medical documentation practices

Clinical Support Responsibilities

  • Document clearly all outgoing and incoming communications and update EHR to reflect appropriate alerts and next stages in follow up care coordination
  • Triage incoming patient and pharmacy communications (via telephone and electronic communications), and/or in consultation with APCs
  • Act as care coordinator for high urgency lab results and clinical cases in collaboration with health center staff, Remote Care Team, on-call services, and lab vendors
  • Participates in health center operations to facilitate ongoing care of patients
  • Participates in sharing on call responsibilities with our clinician pool by taking 4 weeks on-call each year. Call is handled on the phone only and does not require travel to see patients in person after hours. Extra compensation provided for this on call time

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • RN, with Associate's degree in Nursing ( Bachelors degree preferred), plus up to one year of relevant clinical experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired
  • BLS certification
  • Basic clinical knowledge related to outpatient procedural care (abortion, colposcopy, vasectomy)
  • Training/experience in relevant lab techniques (urinalysis, venipuncture, IV placement) and familiarity with aseptic technique
  • Excellent EHR skills and ability to navigate multiple digital applications at once including, Microsoft 365 (Excel, Outlook, Teams, etc.), and other technologies as needed, or willingness to learn
  • Ability to sit for up to 4 hr. and stand for up to 4 hour a day with regular walking and
  • stooping
  • Ability to operate all normal office equipment
  • Ability to travel within PPNNE affiliate
  • Staff providing care remotely must meet the requirements in Policy 340: Flexible Working Arrangements & telecommuting (See PPNNE Personnel Policies)

Compensation & Benefits

  • Compensation for RN positions is commensurate with the number of years since licensure, with the range of pay between 34.86/hr and $50/hr. Access to benefits is available and includes health, dental and vision coverage, paid time off and a retirement fund.
