We are looking for a Legal Counsel, Commercial Contracts, EUR Region.

In this position you will be part of a dynamic legal team supporting the business growth of Maersk in the Europe region, in line with Maersk’s ambition to be the Global Integrator of Container Logistics. As part of a regional legal team, you will primarily be involved in the review, drafting and negotiation of commercial and vendor contracts for Maersk’s logistics and shipping business. You will act as a reliable legal business partner to internal stakeholders, facilitate business growth with a customer-centric mindset whilst protecting the company's values, interests and reputation. A high degree of independence and proactiveness is expected, as well as the ability to take a pragmatic approach towards problem solving and risk management.

The position will be based in the Hague. You will form part of the Europe Legal team and report to the Senior Counsel Europe, Ocean & Logistics, currently based in Copenhagen. The position will collaborate with many colleagues in the legal department (Copenhagen HQ, regionally and in our contract governance team in India) as well as colleagues in sales, procurement and various support functions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide advice and support on reviewing, drafting and negotiating contracts with customers, suppliers, business partners and governmental authorities.
  • Acting as a business partner in facilitating the commercial team’s assessment of risks and rewards from a legal perspective, whilst safeguarding Maersk’s values, interests and reputation.
  • Maintaining a strong understanding of the Maersk contract templates and policies in relation to risk.
  • Responsible for engaging and managing of external legal counsel, including legal budget.
  • Proactively identify and address legal issues in a pragmatic and risk-based manner.
  • Provide training to (non-legal) colleagues on relevant legal topics.
  • Working effectively with other departments and functions such as Procurement, Sales, Finance, Tax, Compliance, etc.

Who we are looking for

  • Higher degree in Law.
  • Fluent in English. Fluency in Spanish or another European language should be considered a plus.
  • Minimum 4 – 5 years of relevant legal experience in private practice at a reputable law firm with international clients and/or in a multinational company, with experience in international logistics.
  • Deep competence in contract law, with demonstrable skill and capabilities in drafting and negotiating complex commercial contracts.
  • Able to work independently, yet collaborate effectively with functional project teams.
  • Have a broad understanding of the commercial playing field and different industry actors.
  • Able to hold a position, yet partnering with the business to find solutions to complex issues.
  • Healthily balances a detail-orientated approach, with a result-oriented mindset.
  • Strong people skills, business savvy.
  • Commercial mind-set, drive to deliver high quality results effectively and efficiently, high level of integrity.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills, able to explain complex legal issues to non-legal persons, empathy, personal tact.
  • Flexible to adapt to changing priorities, fast-paced and fluid environments, willing to travel.
