Job Title: Senior Investment Research Analyst (multiple positions)

Responsibilities:

  • Develop clear opinions to support forward-looking ratings on funds and other investment vehicles based on research that focuses on the funds’ management team, strategy, parent company, performance and expenses (20%).
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis using our databases, monitoring regulatory information, interviewing portfolio managers, and leading on-site due diligence visits of asset-management firms (10%).
  • Monitor important developments in the fund industry, markets, and the broader economy (5%).
  • Develop expertise in various asset classes, asset management firms, and the overall industry. Author analytical research reports, articles, and industry studies (10%).
  • Discuss ratings and reports with external institutional clients and internal investment management group (3%).
  • Participate in projects for internal stakeholders from other departments (3%). Represent Morningstar by speaking to media, conferences, industry associations and regulators (5%).
  • Develop deep subject matter expertise in a limited number of investment markets or strategy types (e.g., emerging markets, structured credit, risk parity, etc.). Lead in-depth trainings on those subjects and act as go-to resources for team members (15%).
  • Mentor junior team members (7%).
  • Actively participate in ratings committee discussions as a voter, as a subject matter expert, or as a mentor to the presenting analyst (7%).
  • As a member of the editorial pool, participate in editing the written products of team members. Respond to edit requests promptly and give clear feedback during the editing process (12%).
  • Author or coauthor long form white papers and landscape reports (3%).
  • Remote work requests will be considered consistent with company’s remote work policy.

Requirements:

  • This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, or a related field and 5 years of relevant research experience as a Research Analyst, Consultant, or a related position. Alternatively, we will accept a Master’s degree in Finance, Economics, or a related field and 2 years of relevant research experience as a Research Analyst, Consultant, or a related position.
  • This position also requires: 2 years of experience with equity, fixed income, or alternatives investment strategies; 1 year of experience using performance attribution tools for analyzing investment strategies.
  • Demonstrated numerate analytical experience through an academic degree or professional experience (i.e. using data to draw conclusions in written form)
  • Experience with writing clear, well-argued investment analyses or commentaries requiring few edits.
  • Experience with mutual fund data and operations; experience with Morningstar Direct, Morningstar.com, or other investment related software programs.
  • Applicants must submit a writing sample that demonstrates writing and analytical skills, along with a resume and cover letter as writing is a critical part of this job. Will accept any suitable combination of education, training, and experience.
