Cake Design Specialist

Position Objective: To assist customers in their shopping experience by providing them with beautifully decorated baked goods in the most efficient, friendly, and courteous manner possible.

Reporting Structure: This position formally reports to the Bakery Manager.

Status: This is a non-exempt position. 

Knowledge

The following is a list of any certifications, formal education, or training requirements for this position.

Essential Knowledge

  • A minimum of 5 years of Cake Decorating experience. 
  • A valid driver’s license is required for deliveries.
  • A food handling permit must be obtained within the first 14 days of employment. 
  • Completion of ongoing training and development as listed on the Cosentino’s Learning Plan. 

Non-Essential Knowledge

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.

Essential Job Functions

  • Know and implement the Casentino Customer Service Standards. 
  • Demonstrates the strong verbal and interpersonal skills necessary for positive customer and peer interactions. 
  • Demonstrates skills over and beyond those of a Cosentino’s certified Advanced or Master Cake Decorator. Designer must be certified / approved by a member of the Corporate Bakery Team. 
  • Consult with customers in a professional manner to determine the bakery items that best meet their needs and clearly document all orders to ensure follow through on service requests. 
  • Schedule, prepare for and perform sit-down cake consultations. This consultation may include providing cake, icing & filling samples, as well as showing prepared gum paste flowers, decorative accents or providing a practice/sample cake the customer may have asked about during appointment set up. Must show a clear communication that is genuine, honest, and makes the customer feel confident in the Designer’s abilities. 
  • Decorate various bakery items in a neat, creative and visually appealing manner. Designer must demonstrate preparation of sculpted cakes using buttercream, fondant and whipped toppings. Designer must also have experience in other mediums such as gum paste, isomalt, marshmallow and royal icing. Designer must have ability to create a foundation or platform in the appropriate size and durability for the cake to be transported, displayed and served. 
  • Able to display proper time management in preparing for and decorating specialty cakes. 
  • Merchandise cases to ensure fullness, freshness and attractiveness of displays to promote sales. 
  • Effectively prepare, package and label product for sale. 
  • Rotate fresh product into cases, coolers and freezers to prevent the sale or use of stale/outdated product. 
  • Efficiently operate, clean and maintain cake decorating equipment such as air brush, edible images, etc. 
  • Abe to operate all equipment safely and competently. 
  • Know, comply with and encourage other team members to comply with all health regulations, sanitation guidelines and safety procedures for your department and store. 
  • Meet or exceed productivity standards to produce desired team and individual results. 
  • Actively work to keep your work area and the department as a whole clean and safe for customers and coworkers. 
  • Resolve customer complaints in a professional manner and recognize when it is appropriate to involve store management. 

Non-Essential Job Functions

  • Promoting sales by suggesting additional products and offering samples.
  • Efficiently restock bakery ingredients each day and notify the bakery manager of items that should be reordered. 
  • Quickly and neatly stock incoming bakery ingredients in their designated areas without damaging merchandise.
  • Previous experience may be required in order to maintain the level of decorating skill and speed required of this position.
  • Support your company by completing additional tasks identified by management, assisting other stores or departments as needed and gaining new skills when necessary.

Physical Abilities

The following physical movements could potentially be part of any scheduled shift and employees will be expected to perform these actions while on duty.

Essential Abilities

  • Reaching overhead with both arms up to a maximum of 78 inches, twisting at the waist and lifting objects with both hands weighing up to 25 lbs. 
  • Pushing and pulling grocery items to the proper locations as needed, up to a peak force of 20 lbs.
  • Standing and walking for long periods of time on tile, asphalt, concrete or other hard surfaces. 
  • Occasionally lifting and carrying up to 35 lbs. 
  • Bending and squatting, at times all the way to floor level. 
  • Able to work in colder conditions of the grocery coolers and freezers. 

Non-Essential Abilities

  • Climbing a ladder, possibly up to 5ft.
