An opportunity exists for a part-time, hourly Research Technologist 1 with the Blue Carbon, Green Fields team in the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences at UW.

The Blue Carbon, Green Fields project pilots a novel partnership between aquaculture and terrestrial farmers in the Puget Sound region to improve soil and water quality and aid in climate change mitigation and adaptation. The Research Technologist will have primary responsibility for conducting on-farm and laboratory soil, water, biomass, and greenhouse gas analysis to evaluate the environmental benefits of this practice. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Drs. Brittany Johnson and Sarah Collier, and will also work closely with other faculty and staff at UW as well as project partners at Viva Farms, Puget Sound Restoration Fund, and Washington State University.

PAY RANGE: $20.06 - 23.61 per hour depending on experience.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Field work

Conduct on-farm soil sampling and gas analysis.

Conduct seaweed and water sampling from tideland shellfish beds.

Work with project PIs to develop and implement field sampling protocols.

Learn to operate and maintain equipment including LI-COR field gas flux survey system.

Work with project partners and participating farmers to document farm management histories.

Coordinate work with other project and field site personnel, providing assistance and training when necessary.

Laboratory analysis

Process and prepare soil, biomass, and water samples for analysis and storage.

Perform various laboratory analyses.

Ship samples to external laboratories for additional analyses.

Work with project PIs to refine analytical protocols.

Coordinate work with other project personnel, providing assistance and training when necessary.

Data processing and archiving

Analyze results of soil, gas, water, and biomass measurements.

Develop and maintain databases for soil, gas, water, and biomass analyses.

Input farm management details into greenhouse gas modeling applications such as COMET-Planner.

Documenting and reporting

Maintain detailed records.

Update and maintain documentation of project protocols.

Retrieve and provide data to project partners.

Assist with data and documentation retrieval and compilation for project reporting.

Possibility to contribute to the development of outreach materials and scientific publications.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Two years experience as a Laboratory Technician II, or equivalent; OR a Bachelors Degree in an appropriate field of science or technology.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Prior experience conducting field or laboratory research.

Excellent attention to detail.

Self-motivated and able to work independently as well as collaboratively.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage respectfully with individuals from diverse and historically underserved backgrounds.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in environmental science or a related field.

Experience with field sampling and/or laboratory analysis of soils, gasses, water, or biomass.

Experience or interest in agricultural system sustainability.

Experience collaborating on research projects with multiple partners.

Prior experience in a research program at an academic institution.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Valid driver’s license.

Ability to drive to field sites in western WA (up to approximately one day trip per week).

Ability to occasionally work outdoors in all weather conditions (including heat, cold, and rain) and to carry 30 lbs. of field research equipment.
