Job Purpose

The Lead Engineer is responsible for the development of Company guidelines and standards associated with the interconnection of distributed generation (DG) and other distributed energy resources (DER). The Lead Engineer will develop these documents through collaboration with internal subject matter experts and with external stakeholders and will support multi-disciplinary teams to support all phases of interconnections implementation including technology review and selection; project scope and timeline; internal and external reporting and tracking; and stakeholder engagement. The Lead Engineer will lead efforts to research and develop plans for additional modernization opportunities including investigation and assessment of new tools and technologies relevant to the modernization of the electric distribution system.

Key Accountabilities

  • Responsible for leading New York Interconnection Technical Working Group (ITWG) for National Grid including acting as liaison with other New York utilities.
  • Lead Smart Inverter Working Group (SIWG) for National Grid implementation.
  • Responsible for the planning, delivery, management and governance of the Company’s ESB-756 interconnection standards and G.L. 309B guidelines and ensuring adherence to the highest standards health, safety, environmental, security and quality.
  • Support multi-disciplinary teams across three states from distribution engineering, system planning, substation engineering, protection engineering telecommunications engineering, distribution standards, system operations, field operations, IT, regulatory, legal, community relations, corporate strategy and other groups.
  • Assist with implementation of grid modernization technologies that may better integrate DER into core distribution planning and operations activities such as distributed generation interconnection, energy storage, microgrids, and distribution management systems.
  • Participate in review and assessment of technology options related to grid modernization, including working with internal teams to execute competitive procurement processes.
  • Represent National Grid by participating in external industry forums such as CEATI, IEEE, NYSERDA and EPRI. 
  • Work collaboratively across the organization to gain a thorough knowledge of the Company’s strengths, weaknesses and opportunities in order to support cross-functional efforts to develop and refine grid modernization strategic plans.
  • Support internal and external tracking and reporting requirements associated with DER interconnections.
  • Work closely with the Distribution Planning and Asset Management team to determine best options for implementation grid modernization technologies.

Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required

  • Demonstrates strong negotiating and influencing skills with the ability to make persuasive presentations to small and large audiences.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering. A MS in Engineering or MBA and minimum of five years in the technical, operational, or engineering aspects of the electrical utility industry preferred.
  • Thorough understanding of electrical engineering concepts such as load flow, relay protection, metering, stability, voltage regulation, power factor, etc.
  • Strong analytical skills including experience using qualitative tools in strategic development.
  • Demonstrated business development aptitude with strong presentation skills.
  • Familiarity with grid modernization technologies
  • Strong leadership skills to penetrate and work effectively throughout the organization; demonstrated competency and proficiency in oral and written communications. 
  • Ideal candidate is innovative, customer driven; displays initiative as a change agent with a can-do attitude.
  • Accepts responsibility and holds others accountable.
  • Participates in and facilitates team effectiveness.
  • Assumes the role of team leader; and makes sound decisions to support strategic objectives. 
  • A valid driver’s license required with a safe driving history that meets National Grid’s Safe Driver policy.

Salary

$128,000 - $151,000 a year

This position has a career path which provides for advancement opportunities within and across bands as you develop and evolve in the position; gaining experience, expertise and acquiring and applying technical skills.
