Project Summary:

The Afghanistan Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning Activity project (AMELA) is a USAID activity designed to capitalize designed to capitalize on the experience derived from past projects (both USAID and non-USAID), programs, and policies to contribute to improvements in project or program performance and promote organizational learning. Based on significant stakeholder feedback, and a critical review of the Mission’s past and current monitoring and evaluation (M&E) contracts, the key objective of AMELA is to provide high quality monitoring, evaluation, and learning support services to Mission customers and ensure the robust integration of M&E and learning across the Mission portfolio. This activity will support learning, adaptive management, and capacity building processes that will greatly benefit all Mission offices while emphasizing strong core monitoring and evaluation capabilities.

Position Summary:

The Editor will be primarily responsible for editing, formatting, and preparing visually appealing graphics, technical deliverables related to evaluations, and other analytic studies. These reports can be highly technical with a quick turnaround time, and the content is typically provided by several individuals, including non-native English writers at times. The Editor will help ensure project reports and other deliverables meet MSI and USAID standards for style, clarity, consistency, logic, data visualization, formatting, and branding. The Editor will possess specialized knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience to allow them to use independent judgment in performing these tasks and be capable of carrying out work with little guidance or supervision. This role may be required to travel to the Arlington, VA office on an ad-hoc schedule.

Responsibilities:

  • Edit and format technical reports and other documents, such as presentations, briefing notes, or training materials.
  • Ensure correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure, to comply with MSI, USAID, and other required standards.
  • Identify and correct repetitious phrasing, technical and/or statistical inconsistencies, word choices that make passages ambiguous or unclear, and verbosity across different sections of lengthy documents.
  • Ensure consistency of narrative voice within documents and across all project deliverables, such as evaluation design proposals, evaluation reports, briefing notes, and literature reviews.
  • Ensure clarity and soundness of logic and arguments provided in project deliverables, including strength of supporting data for findings, ensuring that findings support conclusions, and that recommendations connect to findings and conclusions.
  • Ensure deliverables are written and visually presented in a way that is appropriate for their target audience, and appropriately utilize visual materials such as tables, figures, and photographs.
  • Develop effective infographics, slide decks, figures, graphs, and other visual materials to successfully and concisely convey key messages for technical products, working closely with technical team members to ensure core messages are captured.
  • Review deliverables against provided checklists and standards for quality and suggest revisions to comply with those standards.
  • Ensure all reports to be made publicly available are compliant with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.
  • Provide feedback and communicate with Subject Matter Experts and other team members regarding substantive edits.
  • Ensure data and other information provided in reports are presented in an effective, visually engaging, and accurate way that meets MSI standards and supports best practices in data visualization. 
  • Support the training of project staff and other team members on writing, editing, and formatting standards and expectations.
  • Improve editorial and visual standards for documents and recommend new formats and procedures as needed.
  • Conduct additional research and analysis tasks, as requested and availability permits.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, technical writing, communications, or a related field is required.
  • Minimum five years of editing, communication, and publication experience is required.
  • Professional experience in international development is preferred.
  • Experience with graphic design preferred.
  • Understanding of Section 508 compliance requirements for U.S. Government reports preferred.
  • Familiarity with the Associated Press style, USAID terminology, and MSI’s technical areas is preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite products such as Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Ability to travel on an ad-hoc schedule.
  • Ability to meet deadlines required.
  • Strong project management, interpersonal, writing, and multi-tasking skills required.
  • Strong communication language skills in English required.
