SCOPE OF POSITION

The Director, Patient Care Services is responsible for operations throughout the patient care division of responsibility which may include a population specific service line and/or operational oversight of multiple patient care/clinical departments.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, recruiting and identifying talent; retaining and developing talent; working collaboratively with all levels of leadership and team members to develop productive relationships; maintain voluntary turnover to a minimum as related to defined goals; management of staffing resources, and disciplinary oversight. The Director will facilitate clinical leader and direct report leadership development and supports leaders to achieve optimal operational effectiveness.

Fiscal accountability includes meeting budget targets, maintaining productivity and planning for operational and capital needs. The Director is accountable for practicing fiscal responsibility by developing realistic annual operating and capital budgets, conserving resources, and monitoring expenditures to ensure they remain within budgeted parameters. This position is responsible for flexing staffing to comply with established productivity standards. Additional responsibilities include patient throughput, patient and staff safety, patient satisfaction, mentoring, setting goals and directing performance improvement activities. Serves as an advocate for quality patient care and excellent patient experience across all units, participates and guides departmental process improvement projects.

The Director plans, organizes, directs, and monitors patient care and the patient care activities of patient care areas of responsibility.

The Director will demonstrate inter-professional collaboration with physicians, hospital leadership team members, and external agency employees to maintain, grow and develop service lines and optimal patient care delivery. The Director is responsible for collaborating with physician partners for the implementation of evidence based care, to measure and report quality metrics and improve effectiveness of the service line and/or responsible patient care departments. Works with other nursing department directors to assure team approach to nursing across departmental boundaries and assure safe and timely transfer of patients across the facility and system as needed. Achieve standardization of processes and services across departments to maximize utilization of resources and s maximize utilization of resources and patient throughput.

The Director is responsible for strategic planning in support of the health system Mission and Vision: developing long term and short term goals and objectives; facilities development; equipment evaluation and selection; other resource allocation; and customer relations. The Director is accountable for compliance with all pertinent regulatory standards.

Works with clinical department leadership and communicates team expectations and is aware of daily operations of each department. Must demonstrate excellent customer service and communications skills and have the ability to transfer those skills and methods to the staff. Demonstrates excellent time management skills, critical thinking, analytical skills and clinical competencies.

Self-motivated and serve as strong team leader and coach and role model.

Support shared leadership councils to ensure that one standard of care is given in areas of responsibility. Maintain technical expertise and for development of leadership skills through ongoing education.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree from an accredited Nursing program required, and masters' level education required (MSN or MBA) OR willingness to pursue masters’ education.

A minimum of 5 years RN experience in professional/patient services.

Two years in a leadership role of clinical leadership/operations management.

Minimum of five years effective communication, customer service, project planning, performance improvement, staff development and financial management skills.

Computer literacy, with ability to use Outlook, Internet Explorer, and report writing capabilities, is preferred.

Must be able to adjust schedule to accommodate needs of all shifts. Must be able to complete job related competencies as deemed necessary to the performance of the RN role in the nursing department of employment.

Valid and active RN licensure in appropriate state (TN and/or VA).

Valid and active professional Nursing, or Nursing Leadership certification

AHA BLS required

ACLS, PALS may be desired depending on service line/population specific leadership areas of responsibility
