The Executive Director of the CIRCLE Office (Center for International Relations & Cultural Leadership Exchange) oversees programs and services to all UW International Students, in collaboration with key offices and stakeholders on campus.

This position requires an understanding of multiple cultures, norms, expectations, traditions of foreign countries and how those interplay with American culture. Further, this position serves as lead contact with a key number of campus stakeholders, sponsors, and community partners.

This position is an opportunity for a dynamic leader to shape the next phase of international student programs at the University of Washington—Seattle. The Executive Director of the CIRCLE Office will be responsible for the coordination, development and implementation of programs and services that support International students on campus. The position provides direct service to the international student population on a broad range of issues that affect students' experience at the University, including but not limited to, navigating the intricacies of U.S. higher education system, health and wellness, and cultural adjustment. This position collaborates with an array of institutional stakeholders to other departments on campus to help facilitate a successful transition for international students.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Management

Oversee the implementation of programs and services aimed at helping international students’ successful transition into the University community and the city of Seattle. This includes strong coordination with campus services to create seamless collaboration across different campus departments including International Student Services, First Year Programs, Counseling Center, LiveWell, Graduate School, among others

Direct strategic visioning and planning for programs and services that effectively meet the needs of the international student community.

Develop, implement, and assess programs that 1) engage the greater UW community with new and continuing international students and 2) address the unique experience of undergraduate and graduate international students.

Manage day to day operations. This includes, but is not limited to supervision of staff, management of budgets from multiple funding sources, managing requests from academic, administrative, and external sources for use of space, access to students, and myriad other issues.

Prepare budget requests and annual reports.

Supervision

This position supervises professional staff and graduate and undergraduate student staff.

Liaison

Work closely with a number of UW stakeholders to create a network of support for international students throughout campus. Establish new partnerships/initiatives to streamline the international student experience.

Represent CIRCLE in committees that encompass the UW international student experience.

Student Support

Serve as CIRCLE representative in the UW Care Team. Assist in UW efforts to support international students of concern. Implement a case management approach when supporting international students as necessary.

Manage CIRCLE’s Emergency Aid fund. Connect with other UW departments/academic units to secure funds for students as necessary. Liaise with Student Fiscal Services to support students when needed.

Advise and support the CIRCLE Student Advisory Board (SAB).

Stewardship

Support UW Advancement stewardship efforts in support of UW international students.

Submit funding/grant proposals to advance CIRCLE’s work.

Identify and manage sponsor relationships for CIRCLE’s International Welcome Programs.

Volunteer Development/Engagement

The Director will coordinate with current students and the UW Alumni Association to develop a strategic plan to grow a network of volunteers for in-country send offs.

Collaborate with undergraduate and graduate student organizations to host programs and activities that enhance the new student experience for international students.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position directly supervises the Associate and Assistant Directors and the Student Transitions and Strategic Communications Coordinators.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Master’s Degree in Education, Higher Ed, Student Development, Psychology, or related field.

Six to eight years of work experience with evidence of regional and/or national involvement in professional organizations related to management of student support functions, and experience leading programs that serve diverse groups of students while enlisting the support of faculty and other campus leaders.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience supervising professional and student staff.

Language fluency in at least one language other than English.

Deep knowledge of U.S. higher education system in a global context and how it shapes the student experience.

Knowledge of best practices in student engagement, international student experience, and the changing higher education landscape.
