A Brief Overview:

Over sees the planning and construction phases of new projects. Assists both immediate and long range space planning. Provides and maintains the framework (policies and procedures) and the subsequent management of the space programming, design and construction process of selected facility renovations and construction projects.

What you will do:

  • Serves as member of team that performs both immediate and long-range space planning in accordance with the current SCH Strategic Plan. Maintains and updates Master Space Allocation Plan.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains policies and procedures related to architectural design, construction standards, material and equipment standards, safety precautions, hazardous material management, and other building related concerns.
  • Serves as the primary liaison between SCH management, contracted architectural/engineering firms, government agencies (local, state and federal), and all construction contractors.
  • Assists in managing the design process. Selects architectural and engineering services as required. Oversees design process from planning through construction documents. Keeps outside design firms on-track, on budget, and on schedule.
  • Provides preliminary space planning and design for designated projects. Coordinates meetings with users for initial program work.
  • Establishes project estimates, budgets, and schedules as required. Reviews and critiques estimates, budgets, and schedules performed by outside services.
  • Controls contractor selection, bidding, and/or negotiating process. Prepares rfqs and rfps as required. Selects and processes contract documents.
  • Supervises construction work directly or through a general contractor or a construction manager. Coordinates on-going hospital functions with construction projects to assure efficient continuation of services. Insures design intent is met as well as quality work performed. Insures contractor meets all SCH Contractor Rules and Regulations. Participates or leads scheduled contractor job meetings. Keeps construction process on-schedule and on budget. Oversees hazardous material remediation process.
  • Manages construction process paperwork and associated documents including submittals, change orders, pay out request, waivers of lien, as-built, equipment operating/maintenance manuals, and warranties.
  • Coordinates and communicates with Engineering and Technical Services (E&TS) Department on all project specifics. Gathers and distributes technical information from key personnel. Insures official transfer of responsibility of operating and maintaining all new and renovated facilities to E&TS Department.
  • Insures hospital compliance with various government and JCAHO construction-related regulations (ADA, Life Safety Code, Illinois Hospital Licensure Act, Chicago Building Code, OSHA, etc). Participates in CON applications and subsequent progress reports.
  • Administers the assembly and maintenance of all land surveys, project files (including Waivers of Lien), construction drawings, and construction specifications.
  • Updates SCH administration on the status of major renovation and construction projects.
  • Maintains and updates all drawing files for SCH campus facilities and all satellite facilities including electronic files. (CAD Drawings)
  • Assists SCH legal counsel in the preparation of construction contracts and related documents. Acts as a negotiator with respect to contract disputes and claims.

What you will need:

  • Bachelors Degree Architecture Required
  • 1 Year Experience in administering construction contracts, evaluating construction cost estimates, design compliance, and applicable governmental regulations. And
  • Extensive experience with standard practices and procedures within the appropriate discipline (ie: architecture, engineering, construction management) including planning, programming, design, and construction.
  • The knowledge and skills normally acquired through the completion of a Bachelors Degree in Architecture, Architectural Engineering, or Construction Engineering and/or 10 years of experience in Health Care Construction Management
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills required.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Project are required. Minimum experience using AutoCad is required to view and update existing files.
