JOB DESCRIPTION ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is one of the largest school districts in the United States, serving over 320,000 students in 600+ schools and employing nearly 40,000 people, most of them teachers. CPS has set ambitious goals to ensure that every student, in every school and every neighborhood, has access to a world-class learning experience that prepares each for success in college, career, and civic life. In order to fulfill this mission, we make three commitments to our students, their families, and all Chicagoans: academic progress, financial stability, and integrity. Six core values are embedded within these commitments – student-centered, whole child, equity, academic excellence, community partnership, and continuous learning.

Located within the Office of Teaching and Learning (T&L), the Department of Student Voice & Engagement (SVE) leads the district's inclusive and responsive education strategy that aims to ensure all aspects of schooling in CPS are inclusive of and responsive to the lived experiences of our students, and includes young people as key stakeholders in making decisions that impact them. An important aspect of the Department of Student Voice and Engagement’s strategy is to improve learning by centering identity, relationships, and community.

The Department of SVE also manages the Calumet Is My Back Yard (CIMBY) program, an environmental service learning and student leadership development program that has worked with high schools on the south side of Chicago for over 20 years. CIMBY connects youth to nature by facilitating authentic, place-based learning experiences with Chicago Public High School students and teachers, empowering students through extensive stewardship and leadership experiences, and supporting teachers to engage their students in rich experiential education and civic engagement strategies. CIMBY students play a pivotal role in the Calumet region and beyond - improving local communities and natural areas, and fostering a deeper civic responsibility on Chicago's south side.

Job Summary:

The Place-Based Learning Specialist will develop and implement action plans to support “problem, project, and place-based” experiential learning in high school as a means of civic learning and engagement with Chicago Public Schools. In collaboration with SVE colleagues, this position will assist with making continued advancements in service learning across the district, supporting schools and educators in integrating projects into their science classrooms, supporting interested schools in a school-wide civic learning focus, and broadly advocating for our localized, culturally relevant civic learning approach.
