The Design Director role is a combination of people and practice leadership. As a core member of the Design Leadership team, you will be expected to work autonomously and deliver on our organizational and cultural transformation efforts as well as project objectives related to our IBM Z hardware and z/OS portfolio offerings.

Your Role and Responsibilities

Design Leadership & Community Building

  • Cultivate design excellence and accelerate cultural transformation and innovation
  • Contribute to building best practices, rituals and culture across our design organization in IBM Z and the parent Infrastructure design community
  • Strategize long and short-term plans on how design can meet the needs of our users
  • Ensure coherence and consistency across the experiences in our IBM Z hardware and z/OS portfolio and adoption of a user-centric approach
  • Measure and improve design performance and outcomes across IBM Z hardware and z/OS portfolio
  • Participate in design critiques to give and receive feedback to strengthen work quality and strategy
  • Talent growth & development
  • Design the conditions for the team to do their best work
  • Create and sustain a diverse hiring pipeline in India
  • Foster employee engagement and talent development and acceleration
  • Cross-functional Alignment & Collaboration
  • Engage, educate and align with peers and stakeholders on design’s impact and value
  • Prioritize work in coordination with design leaders and counterparts in engineering and PM
  • Advocate for peer-to-peer leadership and collaboration across functional leaders in core in engineering and PM
  • Operational Efficiency
  • Work with internal functions such as HR, DesignOps, and finance to ensure appropriate resources for success
  • Aid in determining accurate scoping of work
  • Assist in building the organizational and functional infrastructure to scale design
  • Ability to think about the long and short-term to meet the constraints of a continuous release process while iterating toward a future vision

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • 15+ years of experience in design with excellent management and mentorship skills
  • Demonstrated experience in human-centric design with a proven track record
  • Strong engagement in the design community and industry best practices and innovations
  • Excellent presentation skills and communication abilities
  • Proven ability to ensure work delivers on strategic and business goals

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

  • 15+ years of experience in design practice and leadership
  • Advanced degree in a design-related field
  • Enterprise software experience
