Illumina is looking for a User Experience Design Director to lead our digital product design group and drive the User Experience vision and strategy for next generation genomic solutions that will advance human health and create a world without fear of diseases.

You will be responsible for an existing high performing digital product design team with talented interaction designers, visual designers, UX architects, UX developers and more who work across Illumina’s digital product portfolios, unifying powerful capabilities from across Illumina into a human-centered end-to-end experiences, delivering high-quality Illumina products and services.

You will report into the Vice of President of Experience Design, part of Illumina Office of the CTO.

About the Design Department

The Digital Product Design team is part of a larger Experience Design department, inclusive of User Experience Research, Industrial Design, Human Factors & Ergonomics, and Design platform teams. The department is part of Illumina’s Research and Development organisation, which is the area responsible for all scientific research and product development across Illumina.

All About You

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and mentor a team of designers that spans entry level roles to advanced-career professionals, fostering their growth, enabling self-sufficiency, and delivering exceptional results.
  • Partner with other XD leaders to set and execute design strategy; define product strategy and shepherd compelling UX vision and concepts.
  • Deliver innovative and phenomenal end-to-end user experiences with tight turnaround times that meet our business objectives and customer’s needs. Extensive experience using analytics, user research, and other approaches to drive design iterations and solutions is required.
  • Manage and provide strategic guidance to our design system team to ensure solutions are focused on meeting user needs while enhancing our product development process.
  • Influence others and build consensus, and facilitate deep collaboration across teams, including growing and maintaining strong partnerships with product marketing, project management, and development team members as well as UX colleagues.
  • Provide design critiques to drive excellence across products, including on-prem, cloud, and hardware-based offerings, and be able to articulate a strong rationale for the critiques based on your knowledge of design principles, patterns, past experiences, as well as human behavior and Human Factors engineering principles. You must possess a deep appreciation and talent for simple solutions to complex problems.
  • Ensure user centered design is used as a foundation within the framework of a scrum delivery organization, maintaining flexibility in the face of ambiguity.

Requirements:

  • 10+ years as a designer, along with 5+ years as a design leader managing at least 5 designers.
  • MA/MS degree in Human Computer Interaction (HCI) or related field.
  • Deep understanding of user centered design process, methodology, and GUI best practices.
  • Ability to create and execute design strategy.
  • Self-motivated with excellent communication skills.
  • Experience overseeing the design of complex, data-intensive applications.
  • Ability to provide design guidance and feedback across all stages of the user experience, including information architecture diagrams, task flows, wireframes, and high-fidelity designs.
  • Experience with a broad range of current design tools such as Figma, with the ability to quickly learn new tools as they emerge.

The estimated base salary range for the Director, User Experience role based in the United States of America is: $201,100 - $301,700. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
