Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, the largest gun violence prevention advocacy group in the country, is seeking a passionate, dedicated professional to join our team as an Associate General Counsel with a focus in advocacy and political law. This position is part of the Office of the General Counsel (“OGC”) Department of Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund, and Everytown for Gun Safety Victory Fund (“Everytown”). Reporting to the Senior Associate General Counsel – Advocacy and Political Law, the Associate General Counsel will provide legal and risk management advice and guidance to a major fast-paced, mission-driven nonprofit family of organizations. 

We’re looking for a flexible problem solver with experience in advocacy and political law to join our team. 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Work with our team of in-house attorneys to ensure that Everytown conducts its business in compliance with all applicable laws, standards, and practices, including federal and state campaign finance laws, lobbying disclosure requirements, gift and ethics rules, and tax laws governing exempt organizations, including the operation of 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and 527 organizations.
  • Research and advise program staff on various issues, including but not limited to federal, state, and local campaign finance laws, lobbying laws, tax law, intellectual property law, defamation and libel, and other areas of law relevant to nonprofit education and advocacy and organizations.
  • Provide oversight and guidance for lobbying and campaign finance reporting processes and filings
  • Provide regular advice and counsel to staff on programs, and review advertisements, fundraising appeals, and other public messaging for compliance with the above. 
  • Draft and negotiate agreements, including grants and consulting agreements, particularly as related to electoral and lobbying programs.
  • Provide counsel and manage projects to improve nonprofit operations, including working closely with finance and HR divisions to create efficient policies, procedures and training programs. 
  • Develop and deliver guidelines, training, and toolkits for staff and volunteers regarding lobbying and political campaign activities, intellectual property, nonprofit tax law, and other issues relevant to tax exempt organizations. 
  • Provide oversight and review of legal assistant work product, including external communications to vendors and partners 
  • Other duties as assigned by the Senior Associate General Counsel or the General Counsel.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited U.S. law school. 
  • Bar Admission: Member of the NY State Bar or a member in good standing of the State Bar of another state or the District of Columbia 
  • Legal Experience: 3+ years of legal experience and expertise in U.S. campaign finance laws and not-for-profit corporate and tax matters required. 
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation and research skills.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced organization.
  • Ability to handle confidential organizational matters.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Exposure to government regulatory compliance and risk management, preferably lobbying, campaign finance or gifts and ethics is a plus.
  • Ability to rapidly shift between multiple projects and priorities.
  • Persistent and dogged in the face of obstacles.
  • Ability to maintain a sense of humor.

The annualized salary range for this position is $125,000-$140,000. Everytown offers a generous benefits package including medical, dental, and vision benefits; paid time off; a 401(k) match; education assistance and more.
