Associate, Investment Risk and Analytical Services, (IRAS)

Northern Trust

About Northern Trust:

Northern Trust, a Fortune 500 company, is a globally recognized, award-winning financial institution that has been in continuous operation since 1889.

Northern Trust is proud to provide innovative financial services and guidance to the world’s most successful individuals, families, and institutions by remaining true to our enduring principles of service, expertise, and integrity. With more than 130 years of financial experience and over 22,000 partners, we serve the world’s most sophisticated clients using leading technology and exceptional service.

The Opportunity:

As an Investment Risk and Analytical Services (IRAS) Associate, you will support Northern Trust’s institutional clients with reporting regarding their total investment programs. The IRAS Associate primarily supports our investment performance reporting service with the opportunity for exposure to alternative assets tracking, ex-ante risk analysis, compliance monitoring and ESG reporting. In this role, you will utilize a suite of proprietary applications to construct and deliver a broad range of metrics and detail regarding investment performance, including rates of return, asset allocation, market index comparisons, and attribution analysis. The metrics provided will support the evaluation, measurement, and decision-making process of Northern Trust clients, and you will interact directly with our clients to provide analysis and understanding of the reported metrics. You would work in tandem with multiple operational and client service focused groups across Northern Trust.

The Team:

  • The client servicing team is mostly comprised of associates, senior associates and consultants.
  • The immediate team will have 5-6 partners with the broader associate team having about 20 partners.
  • Our team members share Northern Trust competencies such as: attention to detail, being adaptable to change, advising beyond expectations, active communication, analytical thinking, holding themselves and others accountable, as well as building authentic relationships.
  • The team is motivated by timely and accurate completion of regular deliverables and positive feedback from clients and relationship management teams.
  • While an associate is assigned multiple client relationships that he/she works on independently, the entire associate team as well as the management team can be used as a resource for questions. There is regular and open communication between team members.
  • Investment Risk and Analytical Services team is unique, where successful associates can carve their own path in deciding what they wish to do next. While a typical next move would be to a senior associate role followed by a consultant role, an individual is able to pursue leadership, product development, data analytics or client service delivery paths.

The Impact:

  • Uses existing procedures to solve standard problems; analyzes information and standard practices to make judgments.
  • Works within standardized procedures and practices to achieve objectives and meet deadlines.
  • Identifies process improvements and implements solutions with support of senior team members.
  • Owns low touch client relationships that subscribe to more simplistic reporting and supports senior partners on clients of varying complexity, (independently evaluating and responding to client inquiries, determining service requirements, providing training, producing client reporting, and helping clients interpret financial metrics to understand the impact of their investment decisions).
  • Regularly interfaces with senior staff at Northern Trust and/or client offices (CIOs, Treasurers, Directors of Investments), with occasional oversight from more senior partners.
  • Works with internal operations and client servicing partners to problem solve client issues and requests to ensure accuracy and timeliness of all information provided to clients.
  • Independently produces custom reporting and executes client projects with limited oversight.
  • Participates in complex client projects and provides solutions to client requests.

The Minimum Qualifications:

  • Possesses a bachelor’s degree.
  • Has a broad understanding of the job and applies quantitative, organizational, and problem-solving skills and knowledge in a range of processes, procedures, and systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to explain detailed and/or complicated information to others.
  • Understands financial concepts, rate of return calculations, and has familiarity with investment vehicles and benchmarks across multiple asset classes.
  • Displays excellent time management skills and verbal communication skills, able to work under pressure.
  • Has proven strong organizational, written, and verbal client servicing ability.
  • Is energetic, highly communicative, and independent self-starter.
  • Intermediate user of Microsoft Office tools.

The Ideal Qualifications:

  • Internship or professional experience in a related field.
  • Advanced Excel skills.
  • Exposure to Northern Trust or third-party financial software.
  • Experience working in teams and taking leadership roles.
