DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Psychology Department currently has 35 academic FTE, an administrative staff of eleven, and makes several temporary academic staff appointments each year. The Psychology Department has over 2500 undergraduate students declared and proposed in the Cognitive Science and Psychology majors and 70 Psychology PhD graduate students. The Psychology Department Faculty and Staff are all currently housed in Social Sciences 2, John R. Lewis College. The undergraduate advising team consists of the four full-time undergraduate advisors and the Field Study Program Director.

JOB SUMMARY

Applies professional concepts to independently provide prescriptive advice on academic policies and procedures for the Psychology Department, including Cognitive Science and Psychology major requirements, and all aspects of course requirements for degree completion. Under the supervision of the Administrative Manager, the Undergraduate Advising Team has full programmatic responsibility for the administration of the Psychology Undergraduate Advising Program.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $29.24 - $33.52 / Hourly. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES

45% - Academic Advising

  • Monitors and evaluates students’ completion of academic requirements for the Cognitive Science and Psychology majors.
  • Applies professional concepts to independently provide prescriptive advice and assistance to students regarding their academic and degree progress and major requirements for the Psychology department.
  • Updates and applies articulated courses to degree requirements and certifies degree completion.
  • Communicates and exchanges information with other units on campus and makes referrals to help students with their academic program needs (ex. Health services, Disability Resource Center, Colleges/Schools advisors, transfer student services, other academic departments)

30% - Student Services

  • Identifies student needs from programs and services outside of the Psychology department, and refers students to non-academic services as appropriate.
  • Provides information to students on programs with special, clearly articulated eligibility requirements such as honors in the majors, awards, scholarships, and advanced-level courses.
  • Advises on moderately complex issues such as seeking multiple majors, degrees, and withdrawal and readmission to the University.

10% - Supervision and Training

  • Recruit, interview, train, and supervise student peer advisors from our Field Study program.
  • Regularly check in 1:1 and participate in weekly team meetings with the peer advisors.

10% - General Administration and Planning

  • Advises department on scheduling needs for student course progression and requirements completion in the Cognitive Science and Psychology majors.
  • Advocates student interests; recommends updates to academic policies and procedures.
  • Participates as a member of CUA/Committee on Undergraduate Affairs.

5% - Orientation

  • Reviews unofficial transcripts and create and facilitate orientation sessions for new incoming frosh and transfer students in the Cognitive Science and Psychology majors.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Basic knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original idea to solve problems.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, including active listening.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Proven communication and interpersonal skills, with faculty and students, with individuals and large groups from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment and discretion with confidential matters.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree in Psychology or related discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of department / school / college policies, procedures, and requirements.
  • Knowledge of departmental / school / college courses and majors.
  • Familiarity with campus programs, administrative units and range of student services.
  • Experience in web page construction and maintenance.
  • General knowledge of the UCSC campus.
  • Experience recruiting, interviewing, selecting and supervising student employees.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
  • The selected candidate will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
  • Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
