The Vice President, Strategic Planning role oversees corporate and business strategy development and management for the Medical Mutual enterprise. The Vice President is a senior leader capable of working across the enterprise, creating partnerships, and facilitating organizational change. Role is hybrid in Brooklyn, OH (Cleveland).

Responsibilities

Corporate Strategic Planning

  • The VP, Strategic Planning works directly with the EVP, Corporate Strategy and Chief Product Officer and the Executive Leadership Team to develop MMO's enterprise-level corporate strategy, annual corporate operating plan, line of business, and functional strategies.
  • Responsible for the development of Enterprise-wide strategies including long-term Corporate Strategic Plan and Annual Corporate and Divisional Plans to ensure MMO's growth of its core and diversified business in alignment with MMO's mission and vision.
  • Monitors and reports on the progress against the strategic and annual business plans goals and metrics and recommends corrections and changes to address the changing environment.
  • Oversees and directs Market and Competitive Intelligence, bringing together disparate pieces of intelligence throughout the organization and market. Prepares analyses of market dynamics and trends, in support of the planning process as well as real-time business decision-making and hosts strategic discussions to advance awareness of market dynamics, threats and opportunities.
  • Sponsors forums, communications, and reporting to guide prioritization, resource allocation, and plan execution.
  • Provides consulting services to develop strategies in partnership with business leaders. Provides technical and expert support to Executive Leadership and peer VPs on specific issues related to the marketplace environment and business dynamics.
  • Develops content for and leads discussions regarding enterprise strategy, objectives, annual performance, the external environment, and trends with internal and external audiences (e.g., Executive Leadership Team discussions and workshops, Board meetings, etc.) Organizes and leads ad hoc cross-functional workgroups to assess strategic impact of emerging issues. Spearheads analysis and recommendations related to emerging issues in the external environment – how we understand it; what the implications are; what it should mean for our strategic and tactical plans.

Strategy Management and Communication

  • Develops tools to include scorecards and key initiative documents to monitor and report on the progress against the strategic and annual business plans goals and metrics to key audiences including the Board, management, and employees.
  • Tracks and reports progress against the strategy; ensures linkage to results-based incentive plans both in the short- and long-term.
  • Recommends course-corrections and changes to address the changing environment, as necessary.
  • Drives strategy communication efforts including frequent, multi-channel appropriately detailed communication to leaders and all employees, in support of employee engagement; specifically, to ensure employees understand the strategy and their respective role in accomplishing related goals and objectives.
  • Collaborates with Human Resources and Corporate Communications to ensure key elements of the strategy are communicated and cascaded to all employees, to coincide with individual annual goal setting and performance appraisal process timing. Integrates corporate strategy into leadership and culture training along with annual goal setting and the performance review processes.

Competitive Intelligence and Market Insights

  • Oversees team that collects, validates, analyzes, and interprets a broad range of market-related structured and unstructured competitive data.
  • Analyzes publicly available data on competitor and product-specific performance; develops standard approach with routine frequency that aligns with business decision-making, i.e., bids, product development timeline and rate submission processes.
  • Supplements publicly available data with qualitative information volunteered by stakeholders such as brokers, consultants, and providers.
  • Integrates and synthesizes data, into information, into insights to inform corporate strategy, product strategy, membership and financial forecasts, and targeted value propositions in support of go-to-market process.
  • Develops a clear, logical, and standard approach to understanding relative provider discounts, and establishes a means for communicating MMO position to the market in an accurate and favorable light.
  • Mines Coordination of Benefits data, UDS data, publicly available transparency data as appropriate and useful, to inform provider contracting and partnership development.
  • Proactively and routinely conducts deep-dive analyses of key competitors to understand how competitors are winning, what their future strategies may be, and how MMO should respond both in terms of threat mitigation, and opportunity exploitation.
  • Develops and manages (or collaborates with others re) a stakeholder loyalty program that routinely monitors sentiment of members, employers, brokers, and employers through surveys, i.e., Net Promoter Score measurement.
  • Compares MMO loyalty to that of major competitors, the loyalty drivers, and gaps between MMO and competitors.
  • Through analysis, understands drivers of loyalty and drives the organization to improve loyalty and stakeholder experiences.
  • Establishes a closed-loop process to monitor changes in loyalty, drive organizational changes to improve loyalty.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Health Care Administration or related field or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) preferred
  • 10+ years’ experience in a strategic planning, market research and/or strategic role.
  • 5+ years of experience in a leadership role
  • Data-driven decision maker with strong analytical and quantitative thinking
  • Ability to work in a matrixed environment, develop relationships and facilitate organizational change
  • Strong working knowledge of health insurance industry, benefits, and design
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement a detailed strategy, business plan and achieve desired results
  • Understand group health insurance sales and operational processes
  • Skilled in business strategy
  • Generally, performs work in an office setting.
  • Ability to occasionally travel to offsite locations.
