Kingsborough Community College, CUNY is seeking an Academic Student Support Program Specialist for CUNY Start / Math Start. This position requires some evening hours.

Kingsborough Community College was founded in 1963 and is one of 23 campuses of the City University of New York (CUNY) system and offers liberal arts education, as well as career training programs. CUNY Start is an intensive pre-matriculation program that helps CUNY associate degree-seeking students with significant remedial needs increase their academic proficiency in English and/or in Mathematics andmeet CUNY proficiency milestones. CUNY Start includes semester-long, full-time and part-time models, as well as shorter programs that operate for 8-10 weeks during the summer and between semesters. As auniversity-wide program,CUNY Office of Academic Affairs, the University’s community colleges, New York City College of Technology, and the College of Staten Island work collaboratively to provide students with an innovative approach to developmental education and advisement. Along with successful student outcomes, CUNY Start is recognized for its carefully designed curriculum and pedagogy, ongoing professional development, and mentor-based training model.

The CUNY Start Student Support Specialist conducts comprehensive individual and group student orientations, academic advising, performance feedback sessions and conferences, skills development seminars, and workshops. They also support outreach and recruitment new student orientation, information sessions and interviews, and other activities to enable successful program enrollment, completion, college transition and matriculation. The CUNY Start Student Support Specialist is an active member of the program team, working closely with professional developers and instructors in the program, and on special projects and new initiatives. Reporting to the campus CUNY Start Director, the Support Specialist works with a cohort of students each semester to guide their educational plans and establish a foundation for success in college.

Other duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide academic and college success advice; general guidance, coaching, mentoring and career exploration support;
  • Monitor, evaluate, document and report on students’ academic participation and progress, ensure compliance with guidelines, and manage records and files;
  • Advocate for students, support with appropriate program services and referrals to campus resources;
  • Deliver a “college knowledge” curriculum, and in collaboration with colleagues, develop student guides and educational support materials
  • Coordinate regular team meetings with faculty, academic and administrative staff, and actively participate in campus and University meetings and training activities;
  • Participate in executing the program’s daily operations and logistics;
  • Analyze program data, assist with evaluating goals, and develop measurement criteria to perform student learning outcomes assessments and create utilization reports;
  • Assist with student engagement events
  • May supervise and train part-time professional, academic and/or office support staff;
  • Perform other related duties

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree and four years' related experience required.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Successful candidates will have the following professional and business core competencies:

  • Demonstrated experience in academic advising, career advising and/or student development with diverse student populations, particularly underserved high school or college students in an educational setting or college prep program;
  • Facilitation experience in adult or developmental education using a holistic and strengths-based approach to student development;
  • Experience with college and career mapping, financial planning and career development.
  • Knowledge of learning strategies, accommodations and accessibility services;
  • Strong presentation, verbal and interpersonal communication skills to successfully work with and present to diverse learners and audiences;
  • Experience working with linguistically, culturally and academically diverse students;
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational, writing, proofreading and editing skills with solid analytical, evaluative and research skills;
  • Ability to adapt and thrive in a time-sensitive, dynamic, student-centered office;
  • Experience working productively in collaborative settings;
  • Computer proficiency using standard office and educational software programs/applications, including MS Office Suite.

  • Coordinates efforts of faculty, staff, and other service providers to monitor and assess utilization, student progress, and program effectiveness
