Job Description

Position Overview

KIPP NYC is looking for a detail-oriented person with excellent accounting, management, and analytical skills and a drive for results to be a part of the KIPP NYC Shared Services Team. The Senior Accounting Manager will be an integral component of the thirteen-member Finance & Accounting team and will be oversee critical accounting functions for KIPP NYC entities. This position is full-time and will report to the Assistant Controller.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Management
  • Manage school and grants accounting team members
  • Coach and train team members to build accounting skills; support growth and development for direct reports
  • Serve as a partner to the Assistant Controller in driving the team’s key priorities forward
  • Day-to-day Operations
  • Ensure accounting is performed in accordance with GAAP and oversee the monthly close for school financials including grants. Review financial statements for accuracy during each close and highlight any issues to the Assistant Controller. Areas of oversight include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Accounts Receivable
  • Grant Budgeting and Accounting
  • Revenue Recognition
  • Bank reconciliations
  • Balance sheet account reconciliation
  • Cash collections
  • Payroll entries
  • Support the assistant controller in driving the annual audit process; oversee the preparation of schedules for the annual audits, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of delivery; review all statements and support liaising with the auditors
  • Collaborate with other teams including Operations and school based staff on accounting items including grant tagging, etc.
  • Deliver exceptional, friendly customer service by researching and resolving accounting-related inquiries in timely and professional manner
  • Ad hoc projects as requested
  • Some local travel within NYC required
  • Grant Accounting
  • Oversee the accounting for state and federal grants, including CARES act funding Maintain knowledge of Uniform Guidance and ensure compliance for all public grants 
  • Project manage federal grant audits, including collaborating with stakeholders, preparing materials, and overseeing audits
  • Oversee account analysis, grant reimbursement, month and quarter end close and reconciliations 

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree and minimum of 7 years work experience required
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, particularly for non-profits required
  • Experience managing direct reports with a track record of supporting team member growth and development
  • Meticulous attention to detail and ability to maintain confidentiality of information required
  • Flexible with a strong work ethic and an entrepreneurial spirit to accommodate multiple priorities required
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office products with strong Excel skills and an aptitude for learning new software required.
  • Experience utilizing Sage Intacct and compatible accounting software strongly preferred.
  • Experience working in non-profit accounting strongly preferred.
  • CPA or CPA candidate strongly preferred

Compensation and Benefits:

KIPP NYC offers a competitive salary ranging from $130,000 to $150,000 per year. Salary ranges at KIPP NYC are standardized based on role level and role function. Individual salaries are determined through a lens of equity, accounting for years of experience relevant to the role and scope of responsibilities, and are benchmarked against others within the same salary band. Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range, however they are ultimately determined by scope of the position, the candidate's relevant experience, and internal equity.
