Summary of Position 

Under the general supervision of the Director of Marketing and Communications, the Graphic and Multimedia Designer works closely with communications professionals, faculty, and administrative staff throughout the institute to plan, design, and coordinate the production of visual media communications. The designer provides high-quality and professional design solutions to clients with excellent customer service.

  • Three years of experience in design of publications and/or electronic communications, such as advertisements, magazines, tabloids, corporate logos, stationery, brochures, catalogs, forms, marketing and web pages.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, including working with clients and describing projects.
  • Ability to take the initiative and work both independently and in collaboration with vendors, write/editors and/or other designers.
  • Knowledge of computers, related technology, and software.
  • Proficiency in adobe creative suite applications including InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Premier Pro.
  • Website editing and MailChimp experience preferred.
  • Additional Preferred QualificationsBachelor’s degree in graphic design, master’s degree of Fine Arts degree, design experience in higher education, supervisory skills.

Duty/Responsibility 

Visual Media Design

  • Develop creative solutions, including graphic development and layout/design, while actively supporting the institutional brand to advance the mission of the Institution.
  • Design analog brochures, posters, magazines, annual reports, newsletters, identity systems, and fully coordinated campaigns for new and existing clients.
  • Design visual media for digital communications, such as, social media graphics, website graphics, icons, email campaigns, PDFs, etc.
  • Support other designers with basic design/layout as needed, including providing reviews, technical advising, reviewing for accessibility and best practice, and consultation.
  • Work closely with other members of creative team, including designers, staff, and vendors to coordinate project execution.
  • Prepare projects for production, including meeting with production staff to determine the most efficient and cost-effective methods of production.
  • Provide web user interface design and work closely with web developers to implement design solutions.
  • Assist with the creative design, building, and launch of client websites, developing creative solutions within the framework of university brand guidelines, resources, and applying all best practice approaches.

Duty/ResponsibilityPhotography & Video Production

  • Develop visual content for marketing, advertising, and other media campaigns.
  • Participate in all aspects of photography and Video production from concept to completion and preparation for dissemination.
  • Coordinate vendors, university staff, and clients for photo shoots and assist with asset management.
  • Maintain IOD’s photography and Video inventory (physical and digital).
  • Use various photographic techniques and equipment. Capture subjects in professional-quality photographs.
  • Guide clients through the planning and preparing of video and photography projects, providing direction based on their unique needs.
  • Record interviews and other video footage at various locations.
  • Edit audio and video, including sound syncing/mixing and color correction.
  • Coordinate captioning services and support remediation process for accessibility.
  • Coordinate production studio, video equipment, and digital assets.
  • Create animated graphics for intros, lower-thirds, infographics, and more using Adobe After Effects, Adobe Express, Adobe Illustrator, Lightroom, and other tools.

Duty/ResponsibilityClient Relationships/Consultation & Project Management

  • Meet with University clients to discuss, conceptualize, and plan print, web, and electronic communication projects, including making expert recommendations on approaches that will improve efficiency, reduce costs, support branding policies, and elevate the effectiveness of institutional communications.
  • Apply creative thinking and problem-solving skills to provide professional design appropriate to the target audience for educational and promotional materials on a diverse range of content topics.
  • Meet with and present concepts to colleagues and clients and openly discuss opportunities to evolve and enhance creative concepts to improve effectiveness of communications and develop strong, lasting relationships.
  • Independently manage multiple projects; set and meet critical dates within the design and execution process; communicate effectively with both internal and external clients; coordinate with colleagues and external vendors; develop and maintain strong relationships with clients.
  • Meet with clients to gain a complete understanding of their research, grant, or project, their role in the University, their audience(s), and the goal of the proposed communications; recommend solutions for meeting their objectives; design pieces that effectively meet the stated objectives while adhering to institutional and university communication policies.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of all University and institutional communications policies, accessibility and knowledge translation practices, and graphic standards; consult with clients on effective communications.
