Job Description

Position Summary: The Corps Ministries & Programs Assistant is responsible for assisting the Corps Ministries & Program Director in implementing, evaluating, and delivering programs and ministry opportunities which benefit participants emotional, physical, and spiritual health in support of the ministry of The Salvation Army Pontiac Corps. The assistant will also facilitate and oversee building renters scheduled to utilize the building at the discretion of the Corps Ministries & Programs Director and the Corps Officers. This employee will also function as the ‘head counselor’ over other hired day camp counselors during the Corps Summer Day Camp Program and Vacation Bible School (VBS) efforts.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Help identify, develop, recruit potential leaders for corps programming with Corps Ministries & Programs Director
  • Assist Corps Ministries & Programs Director with outreach strategies.
  • Under the direction of Corps Ministries & Programs Director, conduct and evaluate weekly corps programming.
  • Collaborate with Corps Ministries & Programs Director to plan, conduct and evaluate Corps Summer Day Camp & VBS Programs
  • Assist Corps Ministries & Programs Director to conduct and evaluate Corps Spiritual Programming (Jr. Soldiers, Corps Cadets, Men’s & Women’s Ministries)
  • Utilize all program volunteers provided by the Volunteer Coordinator & Corps Ministries & Programs Director
  • Supervise paid Day Camp counselors & volunteers
  • Follow & ensure all SFH & OSHA policies and procedures during corps programming, rentals, and/or events.
  • Provide necessary stats & information to Corps Ministries & Programs Director necessary for program reporting to DHQ.
  • Faithfully utilize and record all necessary program expenditures and provide records to Corps Ministries & Programs Director.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Education/Experience: 

  • High School Diploma or GED is required, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • An undergraduate degree in Christian ministry or youth ministry or children’s education preferrable but not required.
  • Have people and problem-solving skills, as well as clerical and record keeping abilities.
  • 4 years of experience working with children is preferred.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: 

  • This is a ministry position, and therefore evidence of Christian maturity is required. It is expected that the individual will carry out the duties of this position for the purpose of the mission of The Salvation Army
  • It is preferred for this individual to be an active member of the Sunday worshiping congregation at the corps. Soldiership is not required but is preferred.
  • Must be able to communicate Biblical messages, Bible Studies, and devotionals in a teaching/church setting, appropriate to the ages and understanding of the participants.

Computer Skills:

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365
  • Working knowledge of TEAMS and SharePoint
  • Willingness to learn new software as needed

Certificates and Licenses: 

  • Complete Safe From Harm training, and keep current as needed
  • Must have and maintain a current valid chauffeur’s license and pass the Salvation Army Motor Vehicle Record check (MVR); or obtain within 30 days of hire
