Director, Commercial Bank Operational Risk Officer

As part of the Operational Risk Management (ORM) organization, you’ll work with talented associates to provide second line oversight and effective challenge to ensure that Capital One effectively manages operational risk. You’ll also bring your unique perspective and experiences to help us be rigorous, curious and creative.

Operational Risk Officers (OROs) are a team of experienced risk managers that serve as the liaisons between ORM and Capital One. As the Commercial ORO, you will apply your leadership and analytical skills to help advance Capital One's capabilities to effectively manage operational risk in a Top 10 Commercial U.S. Bank. Serving as both an effective challenger and a trusted advisor for Executive leaders within the Commercial Banking business lines, you will be integrated into multiple dimensions of first line activities and risk-taking to help the enterprise properly manage operational risk. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Provide consultation on complex areas of operational risk and the application of operational risk practices and tools within the Commercial Bank
  • Provide independent second line challenge to the Commercial Bank, inclusive of senior management, to drive informed and appropriate risk decisions regarding normal operations and changes to the operations, products, and services.
  • Influence senior management to drive realization and mitigation of new and emerging operational risks
  • Escalation of material unresolved challenges, and in the event that risks have not been sufficiently resolved, or if the business decision falls outside of the established business risk appetite
  • Provide leadership across broader Operational Risk Management department for internal projects and associate development
  • Guide Operational Risk Advisors as they engage with Commercial Bank on Risk Assessments, events, issues and other challenge activities.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Military experience 
  • At least 5 years of Risk related experience in a Commercial Bank role
  • At least 7 years of experience with financial services industry
  • At least 5 years of experience structuring information for senior audiences
  • At least 5 years of experience with Operational Risk Frameworks, COSO Control Methodologies, or Lines of Defense

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in Business Management, Accounting, or Economics, 
  • Operational familiarity with Commercial Lending, Underwriting and Portfolio Management, Treasury Management, Corporate Banking, Commercial Real Estate, Speciality Financial Products, Banking, Capital Markets, Treasury, and Commercial Back Office processes
  • Experience influencing senior leadership in an advisory capacity
  • Demonstrated ability to understand strategic imperatives and position team goals to effectively support those mandates

  • Experience interacting with Audit and Regulatory Authorities 
  • At least 10 years of experience as a Risk Manager or Assurance within Commercial Banking or Treasury Functions 
  • Experience with operational risk core methodologies and risk categories aligned with the Basel II Operational Risk Framework
  • Proficiency with data analytics tools and techniques
  • Proficiency with structuring slides and presentations in order to convey risk information

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

New York City (Hybrid On-Site): $202,400 - $231,000 for Director, Risk Management

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
