Position Summary

The Peer Language Support Specialist (PLSS) will embody our commitment to inclusivity and support, ensuring that all employees, regardless of their language background, can thrive in their new environment. 

As a Peer Language Support Specialist (PLSS), you will serve as a champion in the integration and support of new employees who are English language learners. This position involves working 1:1 with a new caregiver during their 12-week Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL) program, assisting them both in the classroom setting and within the community. The PLSS will focus on enhancing the language process, facilitating better communication skills, and helping learners navigate and adapt to new cultural and work environments. 

The PLSS will support new employees by helping them overcome language barriers, encouraging their participation in community life, and assisting in their professional development. This role ensures that non-native English speakers receive the support they need to succeed in their new roles, improving their confidence and ability to communicate effectively in the workplace. 

The PLSS does not need to be bilingual but should possess strong communication skills, patience, and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by English language learners. 

Essential Job Functions 

Communication and Teamwork

  • Provide 1:1 support to ELL’s in the VESL program, assisting with language acquisition, cultural adaptation, and professional development in both the classroom and community settings. 
  • Participates in classroom and community training of ELL HCPs 
  • Reviews care plans with ELL HCPs and communicates issues or barriers to implementing care plans with the Learning and Development team or the Learning Center Manager. 
  • Communicates ELL HCP support needs while being HIPAA compliant
  • Professionally engages in communication with both the ELL HCP and assigned client’s internal and external support network
  • Utilize effective mentoring and coaching techniques to build confidence and enhance the communication skills of learners.
  • Collaborate with VESL program staff and other relevant teams to monitor the progress of learners, providing regular feedback and identifying any additional support needs.
  • Serve as a cultural bridge for learners, helping them navigate and integrate into their new work environment and the broader community. 

Home Care Duties

Basic home care tasks to be performed are described in detail in the written Care Plan. Basic duties to be performed fall into five categories as described below. HCP PLSS staff are expected to have the abilities, expertise, and willingness to perform duties in these and be able to assist in training or providing feedback to fellow team members:

  • Domestic Services: cleaning, sweeping, laundry, meal preparation and cleanup, escorting to medical appointments, running errands for clients, including picking up groceries and medications 
  • Personal Care Services: assistance with grooming, oral hygiene, bathing, toileting, feeding 
  • Complex Personal Care: assistance with incontinence care, bed baths, repositioning of clients in bed, working with bariatric and bedbound clients, and utilizing hoyer lifts 
  • Paramedical Care: willingness to be trained and provide the following paramedical care: blood glucose monitoring, insulin injections, medication reminders and assistance (including provision of eye and ear drops, nebulizer treatments, and crushed medication), oxygen treatment, basic wound care, catheter and ostomy care, straight catheterization, tube feeding, provision of bowel regimen; completion of logs to document that this care was provided 
  • Specialized Care: willingness to be trained and then provide the following specialized care: use of Hoyer lift, transfers to commode or wheelchair, stand-by-assist, range-of-motion exercises. Willingness to work with clients who have chronic behavioral health diagnoses (including but not limited to Dementia, Bipolar disorder, Schizophrenia, active substance misuse, chronic pain, hoarders, etc.) 
  • De-escalation: trained to implement best practices for de-escalating stressful situations 
  • Demonstrating: willing and able to demonstrate client directed tasks for fellow team members 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • In-depth knowledge of HCP responsibilities, standards, proper techniques 
  • Able to provide home care duties and demonstrate proper techniques 
  • Able to observe application of HCP skills and assess effectiveness and safety compliance 
  • Must be able to work and be in contact with clients with mental health and/or personal hygiene issues. 
  • Must be able to demonstrate critical thinking skills and responsible decision making
  • Understand and implement subtle and specific directions in care plan geared towards client’s mental health in addition to their physical care
  • Have an in-depth knowledge of HCP responsibilities, standards, and proper techniques, and proven ability to demonstrate proper techniques
  • Self-organized, can prioritize competing assignments, and multi-task
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
  • Understanding of the challenges faced by English language learners in professional and community settings.
  • Ability to provide supportive, empathetic, and effective guidance to learners.
  • Commitment to the agency’s values and mission, with a passion for inclusivity and support for all employees. 

Requirements

Successfully completed the HCP I training, have worked for Homebridge for six months, and be in good standing. Good standing is defined as having no active disciplinary action in the preceding six months and demonstrating reliability through a solid attendance record. 

Work Environment 

This position is primarily in the field and includes frequent travel - must be able to travel on foot or via public transportation to all parts of San Francisco County for performance of job duties. May occasionally be exposed to outside weather conditions while traveling to clients. Some exposure to physical risk. Exposure to client apartments, rooms, homes and other venues so that services can be provided, client homes may have pets/pet dander and/or cigarette smoke. May include contact with clients with mental health and/or personal hygiene issues.

Physical Demands 

You are responsible for domestic and personal care; therefore, it is essential that you can meet the following physical demands:

  • Able to work in client homes that may have pets/pet dander/ pest or rodent problems and/or in homes of cigarette smokers (can ask client to not smoke with provider present)
  • Able to be physically active for duration of work shift, excluding breaks
  • Able to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 25 lbs
  • Able to walk up and down a minimum of two flights of stairs
  • Able to bend downward and forward at the leg, waist, and spine
  • Able to kneel on one or two legs
  • Able to stand for extended periods of time
  • Able to extend hands and arms in any direction
  • Able to walk minimum of two city blocks 

San Francisco Pay Range

$28—$28 USD
