Job Description

The Division of Family Services provides temporary, emergency shelter to homeless families with children younger than 18 years of age and pregnant women and operates and maintains over 170 shelters for families with children throughout the five boroughs. The shelters are operated by over 50 providers, most of whom are non-profit social services agencies contracted to provide services.

Jamaica Family Residence, through collaboration with the leadership, Social Service team and Operational staff, prides itself on the level of services provided to its residents. Through assessments, engagements and referrals, the families are strengthened during their stay in the shelter to face their challenges and to return to community life.

The Department of Homeless Services is recruiting two (2) Community Coordinators to function as Housing Specialists at the Jamaica Family Residence, who will:

  • Conduct extensive field work to seek out new opportunities for shelter clients and the homeless population.
  • Look for options to secure permanent housing.
  • Meet with tenants, landlords, brokers, other city agencies, and any other informational source to obtain enough information to determine clients’ needs. - - -
  • Share important issues affecting the homeless community and offer insight for improvement.
  • Meet with landlords, building superintendents, and brokers to discuss possibilities of available housing within the community.
  • Interact within the various communities DHS serves to maintain a positive working relationship with the communities.
  • Act as team leaders to inform communities of the support services DHS has to offer to its homeless population. If necessary, conduct training to showcase DHS’ available services.
  • Perform outreach services, interview, and meet with clients within their primary residence to further assess their needs.
  • Escort families to public assistance and housing related meetings, and all relevant appointments.
  • Provide training to the residents and businesses within communities DHS serves in reference to homeless issues.
  • Encourage community participation in community activities. May participate in programs geared towards community development and improvement.
  • Perform initial assessment on new clients’ needs to determine need of DHS’ services.
  • Provide support to clients transitioning out of shelter to permanent housing by referring families to appropriate real estate brokers for assistance.
  • Perform search for available/appropriate housing, complete packages, do reconciliations, and enter move out requests.
  • Utilize CARES, a system-wide case management system, to document families' exit strategy, and update housing notes.
  • Provide high-level administrative support to the ASW, Site Manager and the Social Services Unit. Support.
  • Gather historical background on clients, review documents from clients for accuracy, and follow up on any outstanding issues.
  • Provide weekly reports to supervisors, and perform housing interviews and apartment viewings, as assigned.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned by the Shelter Director.

Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or

2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or

3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
