Responsibilities*

Monitoring the Pathology Flight Board to direct staff to meet the department?s timeliness metrics of the Phlebotomy Department.

  • Functional supervisor of the phlebotomy team along with management
  • Monitor and asses daily workflow and workload and course correcting as necessary.
  • Serve as a liaison between the phlebotomy department and the nursing floors.
  • Monitor simultaneously Pathology Flight Board, MiChart, When to Work Software, and SoftLab to direct staff and meet timeliness metrics.
  • Respond to Flight Board Alarms to prevent delay in patient care.
  • Complete and manage the handling of incoming, duplicate, or overdue orders.
  • Assist in the identification and resolution of operating problems related to workflow, scheduling, and deployment of staff.
  • On a rare occasion be able to perform blood draws from more complicated patient.
  • Participates in training (detailing the Flight Board workflow), mentoring and support to new employees and less experienced staff. (As it relates to the Flight Board and workload distribution).
  • Assist Associate Supervisors with workload assignments.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Document problems and resolution; notify appropriate laboratory or clinical staff.
  • Flex to units/locations where patient volumes are high.
  • Maintain work area in a well-stocked, clean condition.
  • Provide feedback, to associate supervisor, supervisor, and manager.
  • Work effectively with others to accomplish goals.
  • Follow appropriate ordering procedures using HIS and LIS
  • Process lab orders from Hospital Information System (HIS), utilizing all appropriate resources to ensure that proper lab work is being completed.
  • Utilize the Laboratory Information System (LIS) to complete lab ordering process and cancellations, as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates ability to navigate Chart Review in the HIS to problem solve, identify previously completed testing, answer questions, etc.
  • Demonstrates ability to track specimens in the LIS from Blood Draw to performing laboratory.

  • Stay familiar and know where to locate fire and disaster plan.

Required Qualifications*

In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment. 

  • High School diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills.
  • At least 3 years of Phlebotomy experience
  • Requires frequent (standing/walking/sitting) for long periods of time in front of multiple computer screens.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Familiarity with UMHS electronic medical record system
  • Familiarity with Soft Lab System and When to work Scheduling System
  • A bachelor?s or associate degree with 3 years or more Phlebotomy experience preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge or experience of phlebotomy and laboratory testing. 

Work Schedule

This full time, 40 hour position is on the day shift and will include rotating holidays, on-call and weekends, hours will be 4am to 12pm M-F.

Additional Information

  • May works with infectious disease and/or hazardous materials.
  • May have exposure to noise from laboratory equipment and pneumatic tube system.
