Community Relations Liaison

Who We Are

The Office of Government and Community Relations connects Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Medicine to the external community and amplifies the exceptional things happening at Stony Brook. We work closely with external groups, associations, elected officials and schools to respond to community needs and connect neighbors with services and resources at the University and Medicine. Our office also serves as a resource to Stony Brook University and Medicine employees and students interested in participating and or planning external community events.

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Two (2) years of full-time professional experience working in any of these areas: higher education, advocacy, educational policy, community outreach, or a related field (student work experience may be considered).

Preferred Qualifications:

Three or more years of full-time professional experience working in any of these areas: higher education, advocacy, educational policy, community outreach, or a related field. Experience working with community organizations, issue spotting, and/or event planning. Experience overseeing and conducting support work for diverse projects with K-12 students. Experience collaborating with faculty and/or staff.

Brief Description of Duties:

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Community Relations, the Community Relations Liaison will provide support on key University and Medicine initiatives. Support will include writing, research, analysis, and presentation development. As part of a team responsible for representing the institution, the Liaison will work to strengthen the relationship with the community at large through information distribution about University projects including academic initiatives, construction projects, community programs and other priorities. Duties will include problem solving, communications and outreach, attending and providing reports on community and University meetings, assisting with event planning, outreach to the community, and interaction with the internal University and Medicine community.

In this role, the Community Relations Liaison is expected to have excellent written and verbal communication skills. The incumbent must have experience working as a member of a team in a dynamic environment with a high degree of professionalism, discretion, and ability to effectively multi-task in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with a high degree of accuracy and organization.

Duties: 

  • Assist the Assistant Vice President of Community Relations on key University and Medicine initiatives. Support will include writing, research, analysis, and presentation development.
  • Distribute information about projects including academic initiatives, construction projects, community programs and other priorities.
  • Provide assistance with Division and University priorities including event planning, outreach to the community, and interaction with University and Medicine offices to solve problems.
  • Attend and provide reports on community and University meetings.
  • Work as a member of a team responsible for representing the University and Medicine.
  • Strengthen relationship with the University, local/regional organizations and the community at large. Duties will include problem solving, communications and outreach and directing calls to relevant University people/offices.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission. 

Special Notes:

This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,087 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
