DESCRIPTION

The Materials Program Manager is the leader responsible to deliver products that delight Amazon’s customers at the right product cost. The MPM does this by challenging cost and feature creep, leading costing exercises, participating in early concept reviews, working with supplier partners and cross-functional teams, all while reporting to executives on status and progress.

Key job responsibilities

The Materials Program Manager (MPM) is responsible for the management and delivery of the product financial health for groundbreaking, highly integrated consumer products. This MPM has a business orientation and is responsible for working within operations, engineering, and software teams to drive development, implementation, and management of the product cost. The MPM is the business voice responsible for capturing, documenting, and communicating financial exposures for the product. The MPM is involved in all stages of the product’s lifecycle, from pre-concept costing through development, into the start of production and end-of-life.

The MPM is the Single-Threaded Owner (STO) to:

  • Report the product cost status, risks, and opportunities in executive reviews
  • Work with engineering, operations, commodity managers, product managers and finance to set program cost targets
  • Challenge cost increases, especially where not consistent with approved program design and feature goals
  • Project program BOM+MVA cost to the life-time of the program and drive actions cross-functionally to reduce cost.
  • Be knowledgeable of market trends in cost, supply, and market risks
  • Set up the Product Sourcing Strategy (SPOR)
  • Drive approval and mitigation actions for Risk Assessment Request (Risk Buy)
  • Collaborate with cross functional team members to identify, mitigate and monitor risks associated with BOM, material, Cost, SPOR and supplier Tooling

A day in the life

At any stage of the program lifecycle, the Materials Program Manager will be solving problems-

  • At pre-concept, the MPM is key to the approval of new concept products. The MPM works with cross-functional teams to identify cost and performance trade-offs, costing design alternatives, and establishing product cost targets and guardrails
  • During development, the MPM identifies cost opportunities and risks, establishes supplier strategy, and identifies & mitigates cost and supply risks
  • Any given day, the MPM will be looking at design alternatives for a new concept, or in an executive program review to lead the discussion of market cost trends or cost risks & opportunities for a given product

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline
  • 3+ years experience in the business procurement/planning organization of a consumer market segment company
  • Experience in procurement and sourcing practices working with engineering, supply chain and Tier 1 OEM partners

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent analytical and communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and maximize internal resources
  • Experience leading and defining requirements and driving these across diverse organizations
  • Ability to dive deep and understand should cost modeling
  • Experience defining sourcing strategies
  • Experience driving cost reduction initiatives
  • Experience identifying risk, opportunities and mitigation plans
  • Experience influencing cross functionally
