Job Title: Housing Specialist

Job Summary:    

CASES seeks a Housing Specialist to join its Intensive Services Unit within Pretrial Services. This initiative will implement innovative approaches to working with individuals who have been placed in the Supervised Release Program and experience more extensive needs and challenges that may impact daily functioning and overall program engagement. The ideal candidate for this position will work well as part of a coordinated clinical team actively assisting all team members. The focus group of program participants manage challenges in mental health, substance use, employment, and medical health. The team promotes proactive, sustained engagement in the community as a catalyst to individual transformation by bridging participants to community partners and resources eager to support our participants in realizing their greatest potential. The Housing Specialist will be an active partner in providing direct services to participants primarily in the community with additional services being provided at other CASES program locations. 

The Housing Specialist is a professional with a bachelor’s degree who engages with clients in the community to provide support for their housing needs. This role involves collaborating with shelters or existing housing providers, facilitating the submission of housing applications, assessing clients’ readiness for housing, and advocating for the appropriate level of housing and support within their living environments. The Housing Specialist plays a crucial role in guiding clients through the complexities of housing processes and promoting independent living skills within the community.

Salary: The salary range for the Housing Specialist position is $50,000 - $55,000 per year. 

Shift Hours: The Housing Specialist position is full time from Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm. 

Location Address: 4 West 125th Street New York, NY 10027. 

Workplace Flexibility: CASES offers various work arrangements, where possible for certain roles. The Housing Specialist position is full time in person.

What you will be doing:

  • Housing Specialist will assess participant’s housing requirements and formulate a personalized plan to secure safe and affordable housing. 
  • Evaluate participants’ eligibility for government-financed housing programs, including subsidies and benefit programs. 
  • Aid participants in searching for available properties or beds in facilities. 
  • Offer personalized advocacy and support to participants in housing programs. 
  • Housing Specialist will Conduct community outreach to discover housing opportunities. 
  • Develop partnerships with housing agencies, shelters, and housing programs to establish a dependable referral process.

  • Create and sustain a database of housing resources and programs to furnish participants with relevant information. 
  • Address inquiries regarding housing application statuses and take necessary actions to achieve resolution for all housing-related matters. 
  • Housing Specialist will assist in completing supportive housing applications in the Coordinated Assessment Placement System.
  • Collaborate with pertinent parties (i.e., contracted provider agency staff, FCLS, advocates) to suggest and/or work towards resolving housing issues. 
  • Housing Specialist will collaborate with the intensive service unit clinical team to provide support in various responsibilities, ensuring seamless assistance to all participants. 

What we are looking for: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in human services, social work, or related field. 
  • Working knowledge of social service agencies, housing subsidies, vouchers, and public benefit programs. 
  • Experience working with individuals with serious mental illness, and/or co-occurring substance use disorders. 

Preferred Skills:   

  • Excellent communication, customer service and organizational skills. 
  • Strong analytical, mediating, and negotiation skills. 
  • Excellent case management skills. 
  • Experience working with individuals involved in criminal legal system preferred.
