Part-Time Lecturer, Writing as Critical Inquiry

New York University

Description

NYU is committed to providing a campus community that reflects and enacts the values of inclusion, diversity, belonging, and equity that inform academic excellence. NYU’s Washington, DC Academic Center is seeking a local, part-time lecturer to teach an undergraduate course, “Writing as Critical Inquiry.”

The course is expected for Spring 2024 (late January to early May). The class meeting pattern for this 4 credit course will be discussed with qualified applicants during the interview process. In addition to the time required for course preparation, classroom instruction, and assessment, the instructor is required to hold a minimum of one set 60-minute office hour per instruction day, during which the instructor will be available to meet with students. The instructor must be prepared to deliver course content remotely if conditions do not allow in-person instruction.

The instructor role includes all preparation, delivery, and grading. Using Washington, DC as a learning tool (e.g., by inviting a guest speaker or organizing an excursion) is an expectation for the course. Courses are to be intellectually challenging in content, and rigorous student assessment is required. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who share NYU Washington, DC’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and who can contribute to the diversity of intellectual life at our site.

Course Description:

In Writing as Critical Inquiry, students develop their skills in analysis and argumentation by exploring the ways in which the ideas of others can be incorporated into their own writing. Students read and discuss longer, more challenging texts than they did in the prerequisite writing course and are expected to incorporate a broad range of primary and secondary sources to develop and support increasingly complex ideas. Students are introduced to a wide variety of potential resources at the library and learn the mechanics and conventions of the academic research essay. The course continues to encourage in-class participation, collaborative learning, and workshop presentations.

Curriculum Background:

Liberal Studies' Core is a dynamic liberal arts curriculum that provides a global and interdisciplinary foundation for nearly 100 NYU majors. The curriculum emphasizes conceptual and spatial frameworks to trace the movement of ideas and the interconnectivity of material culture, through the study of different texts, histories, exchanges, structures and systems, languages, arts, and writing from early antiquity through contemporary times. Small seminar-style classes and close faculty-student interaction ensure the benefits of a liberal arts college.

All classes are global in scope and perspective, discussion-based seminars, and taught by faculty who are experts in their fields. The mission of Liberal Studies is to pioneer an interdisciplinary undergraduate education that engages students in interrogating global traditions and forging the new traditions that will shape the future.
