How will you CONTRIBUTE and GROW?
The selection is aimed at identifying a person capable of covering the function of Instrument & Automation Engineer to be included within the Capital Projects Team (CPT) department of Air Liquide Group at the Milan or Priolo offices.
The position reports to the Technical Services Leader and requires proven knowledge of the instrumentation and automation discipline (field instruments, analysers, control valves, safety valves, bulk materials, control systems, fire and gas system, other systems, etc.) and related international standards (ATEX, etc.).
As part of the South West Europe Industrial Direction, the Capital Projects Team is in charge of the proposal and execution phases of major investments aiming to extend, enhance, renovate the industrial facilities owned and operated by the Air Liquide Group in the South West Europe (SWE) cluster countries.
Depending on the size and complexity of the projects, the Instrument & Automation Engineer will be assigned to one or more jobs for which she/he will have to carry out the following main tasks:
Estimation phase
- review or develop technical solutions for Instrument & Automation systems and apparatus in compliance with company standards and project specifications,
- participate to cost budget estimation, development of request for quotation and check technical offer, and lead technical discussions with vendors,
- support risk assessment, clarify scope and provide technical input to ensure a safe and reliable solution,
- support the development of project schedules and manpower requirements.
Execution phase
- provide support for or review the basic design (data-base, data-sheets, specifications, control strategy, functional analysis, network architecture, software platform definition) and detailed design (cause and matrix effect, detailed functional analysis, programming, component set and interlink, cabling plan) compliance with company rules and project specification,
- support the procurement by identifying, pre-selecting and qualifying the suppliers of Instrument & Automation systems and apparatus and subcontractors for the installation,
- when following the project as Instrument & Automation specialist, develops the project deliverables and the Material Requisitions with all related attachments (data-base, data-sheets, specifications, ITP, vendor document requirements, ecc.)
- carry out the technical alignment of the vendors offers developing the Technical Tabulation and the Technical Bid Evaluation,
- provide support to the buyer during the Instrument & Automation systems and apparatus purchase order definition phase,
- after purchase order placement, carry out vendor follow-up (documentation, inspections, tests, etc.) keeping the necessary technical contacts with the involved vendors,
- when following the project as Instrument & Automation coordinator, develops the Material Requisition for the subcontracting of Instrument & Automation Engineer activities to external companies,
- when following the project as Instrument & Automation coordinator, manage the instrumental and automation design activities of external companies to ensure the development within the times and costs foreseen by the project, and guaranteeing the engineering quality in compliance with project and contractual contents, and company standards/procedures,
- during the erection phase support the construction site for all engineering issues related to Instrument & Automation systems and apparatus arising from construction activities,
- when department workload requires involving external Instrument & Automation specialists (either as services providers or as engineering companies), the internal Instrument & Automation Engineer will ensure the supervision and coordination of such external engineers:
- develop the Material Requisition for the subcontracting of Instrument & Automation Engineer activities to external companies or professionals,
- manage the Instrument & Automation design activities of external companies or professionals to ensure the development within the times and costs foreseen by the project, and guaranteeing the engineering quality in compliance with project and contractual contents, and company standards/procedures, and in general all the tasks described above.
Other activities
- acquire project and contractual contents related to Instrument & Automation systems and apparatus, and the applicable technical attachments, highlighting any inconsistencies where present,
- determine and select Instrument & Automation systems and apparatus in compliance with technological, technical, contractual, economic requirements and company standards,
- draw up the Instrument & Automation systems and apparatus work program and update the activity progress, ensuring compliance with project schedule and the budgeted engineering man-hours,
- interact properly with the other company technical services (process, electrical, machinery, etc.) to ensure an appropriate flow of information necessary for a correct engineering development,
- support the PM and PE in the assessment of the necessary engineering related to Instrument & Automation activities,
- participation in project review meetings as per project managers requirements (Kick-Off Meeting, Ready For Start-up Review, capitalization),
- support operating teams,
- act as Instrument and Automation Expert and perform Design Validation,
- support and supervision during construction,
- support and participation during pre-commissioning & commissioning phases,
- participate to AL Community of Practice, the community of specialists of the relevant discipline.

Profile
- Minimum 5 years of experience as Instrument & Automation Engineer gained in Engineering and Contracting Companies.
- degree or diploma in electronics or automation engineering.
- DCS, PLC, SCADA, Fieldbus, Sensor and Actuator knowledge.
- Knowledge of instrumental and automation international norms and regulations.
- Fluency in Italian, English spoken and written/
Preferential qualification
- Basic knowledge of production processes of industrial gasses.
- Knowledge of other language such as French or Spanish.
