Head of Communications, Greater China

About the Role

WeWork is currently seeking a Head of Communications. This full-time position will be based in Shanghai.

The position will offer the right candidate a unique opportunity to join one of the world's foremost late-stage growth companies and to help build an integral part of the public affairs function from the ground up.

The successful candidate must be able to acclimate quickly, assess the external and internal communications priorities, establish the relationships they need to move forward and execute.

In addition, we are looking for someone that has a combination of great storytelling and creative abilities, a willingness to explore and experiment with external and internal communications techniques and platforms as well.

Strong candidates will have a sophisticated understanding of media relations, influencer and government relations, issue management, marketing and business development, as well as experience conceptualizing, executing and promoting brand awareness and market development opportunities, partnerships, and events across Greater China. The person in the role will work closely with General Manager, Greater China and all cross-functional teams in Greater China. The position will offer the right candidate a unique opportunity to be a true partner in continuing to build an important region for the company.

Responsibilities

  • Deepen WeWork’s brand and product awareness in markets through local earned media and via multi-channel cross-functional campaigns
  • Strengthen WeWork’s brand and business through partnerships, programming and thought leadership
  • Establish WeWork as an influential civic stakeholder and protect business interests through government and influencer relations
  • Develop and direct the public affairs strategy for the Greater China region
  • Partner with the Head of Public Affairs, Asia, and other departments to ensure that the communications efforts in the Greater China region are aligned with our wider strategy
  • Collaborate with and support the regional Public Affairs team (Asia) in developing and implementing proactive and reactive communications plans and initiatives to promote WeWork to its potential member base in our established territories
  • Develop and implement launch strategies for new markets
  • Work with the regional marketing/events team to vet opportunities for media interest and align events strategy with communications strategy
  • Coordinate with government relations team to discuss possible collaboration and partnership opportunities in our Greater China region
  • Build out the platform for WeWork’s Greater China executives via thought leadership campaigns not limited to speaking engagements and interview opportunities and work with directly executives to manage those opportunities
  • Devise, localize and sign off on messaging for executive presentations and interviews
  • Develop, oversee and manage localized messaging/narratives for regional and local execs and/or adapt global messaging/narratives as appropriate
  • Cultivate and own strong relationships with key stakeholders (media, bloggers, KOLs, government, partners, members and cross-functional team)
  • Research, compile, analyze and flag WeWork and its peers’ media coverage and industry reports
  • Follow key trends by keeping abreast of the industry, competition and coverage
  • Curate, edit, proofread and translate materials including press releases, pitch letters, fact sheets, backgrounders, and correspondences, etc.
  • Prepare, preempt and mitigate potential issues and crisis

Requirements

  • 12 to 20 years of communications experience - external, internal, in house or agency, journalism or elsewhere...the more meaningful experience the better.
  • Experience working across various regions and/or territories especially in the Greater China region.
  • Passion for storytelling, learning and a commitment to excellence.
  • Proven ability to develop and deliver strategic integrated communications plans - successful candidate should be able to demonstrate successful outcomes from communications activities where they have conceptualized, developed and executed a communications plan.
  • Genuine communications savvy - you must have strong content curation, copywriting and editing skills; as well as strong social content generation skills.
  • Superior presentation / advisory skills - clear, concise thinking and sufficient gravitas to deliver meaningful advice to senior leaders on communications strategy in a timely fashion
  • Strong project management skills - have to be able to organize work in a methodical and rigorous manner but equally comfortable in a deadline-driven, fast-paced environment.
  • Proactive attitude, responsibility and perspective that continually advance the quality of our work.
  • Impact player - you must be a strong self-starter who is willing to make their mark in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial organization
  • Leader- we are looking for an inspiring leader who embraces and embodies WeWork culture and develops star players.
  • Willing / able to travel to both existing and new locations around the world. Expected travel no more than 30% of your time
